Just a thought I read up on this before and one of the things I picked up on was keeping your pump submerged in fuel all the time IE keep your tank above 1/4 tank.
This is what I have told the wife to fill up when its the quarter to prevent the pumps drying out !

Our L322 on tow with a twin axle caravan 17.8 to the gallon on petrol
Normal running around never below 15 to the gallon
On a run on the motorway 24 not loaded up ! This was recently !

Take it off and give it a bit of a strip down and clean.
Normally its either the solenoid faling on it not closing so springs might have gone weak.
The main spring either has snapped via corrosion.

The motor on these is just a pleasure to drive all the time be it gentle cruising or putting your foot down. I must admit it is very smooth on gear changes and juts follows through with the power.

I was in the same boat as you a couple of years ago. I found that the diesel L322 was a lot quicker and quiter than the td5 !
But after a deal gone wrong with a guy that backed out I ended up test driving a 4.4 v8 petrol. After a five minute drive I decided then that petrol was the way...

Just by interest what make bearings were you using???
Was it ****part or Timken ?
I have used both and never again will I use ****part for bearings they are utter shiiite !

Just a guideline it was 200 + vat at my land rover stealers and same from the indy!
Make sure you put the one with the metal wheel fan instead of the plastic as Saint will point out too.
Also you can do it in a day and you don't need special tools to do it !
