Probably a bit late to mention this, but perhaps you should have logged the transmission temperature from cold over the same route before and after the new cooler and then compare the traces. ;) It may have given you an idea if the cooling capacity has increased.

What a absolutely brilliant post ,
However i was wondering saint.v8 how many o rings are needed? I have this thermostat part Including a spring what shot out of the oil cooler plastic 3 hose connector part when i disconnected it. No sure if that was supposed to be that way or its broken inside the housing ?
I was hoping to just remove the 3 hose plastic part only and replace, is that possible or do i need to remove oil cooler has well? Do push fit 3 hoses need o rings replacing with this job?

i was using a lower pipe to drain off some coolant to make some room to refill to correct antifreeze strength 50/50 cars sitting until i pluck courage to do it this week!

Just to add to this step by step great post by saint.v8, hope you dont mind saint.v8?
I taken off my 3 hose part and noticed i may have unclipped the wrong clip when letting out coolant on the lower hose, i think the thermostat housing part looks like it suppose to come apart to access thermostat? Theres no mention in. Rave or on breakdown on microcat diagrams of this, , i had already ordered this new part and may as well replace it now when it arrives ,
but heres a few images that the larger clip releases. There a recess where the it back in

No O Rings need to be replaced as these are (or should be) integral to the hose and connection fittings.

Yes, you have undone the clip - the 'stat, whilst accessable, is not a servicable item and needs to be replaced as a complete 3-port unit.

If you are just replacing the 'stat and/or the coolant mounting plate, no need to remove cooler from the Hydraulic Hoses.

I replaced the lot, 'Stat, Plate and Oil Cooler as whilst I was under there and preventative maintenance (the cooler does clog eventually)....

Thanks for getting back to me on that , appreciated,
yes, i got the 3 port unit replacement today, and will fit it,if the weather gives me a break ,
The car is outside drained of coolant at moment, i did get the 2 new o Rings for the cooler just in case i had to remove , will save for a later date if and when that day comes to replace them along with the cooler?
Your pics were very helpful indeed.
Thanks:)

I had the box go into cool down mode last week as Saint described. Not sure if this was a result of changing the transmission fluid a couple of months ago stirring up all the crap inside or just age. I'm following Saint's how-to for changing the cooler/plate/thermostat.
The pipes from the g/box to the cooler are proving a nightmare. One just slipped of under finger pressure, but the other just won't shift.
I'm thinking of cutting the pipe at the cooler to get some clamps on it.
Does anyone have any tips to get shifted?
