Thanks for all your help/ comments. After a bit of trial and error it seems the main terminals on the solenoid were back to front (compared to what the instructions indicated).

In terms of wiring it correctly I have checked and double checked unless I have got the solenoid the wrong way up? - I didn't look to see if the terminals were numbered (I have now checked and they are not) I just looked at the picture in the instructions and went from there.... Would it do...
