Mine had similar symptoms, turned out to be the coil on the way out.

Just fitted a razor edge bonnet to the old girl, now have a deluxe bonnet surplus to requirements. The strenthening struts underneath have rotted quite a bit but easy repair, free to a good home as long as you can pick up from Basildon, Essex.

All the tools I can stuff under the passenger seat, WD40, spare coil, some old HT leads and some spark plugs.

You could use defender steel wheels, still only 5.5" wide but are for tubless tyres, which will give you more tyre choice.

A friend of mine once bought an old car with a bad paint job like yours, he used gaffer tape, sticking on strips of tape and ripping it off, it worked well!

I think they were tubeless from 2006 on.

Used series 3 dashboards seem to be very expensive nowdays. Is your's beyond repair?

Why not use the tub, along with the axle and springs to make a trailer to pull behind your 88"?

A big roof rack will slow you down but by how much I don't know. You could take it off and try without it.
