My series 3 has the big box type roof rack fitted with 4 spots mounted on it. I know the drag affects the mpg but does it also have a big impact on speed?

Beofre fitting it I did manage to hit 70 ut I've had to sort out fuel pumps and all sorts and now with it on, Im struggling to get past 55 (I change up to overdrive a tad too early maybe which doesnt help) but is that normal for having a big roof rack?

Engines been rebuilt as has gearbox and rear diff is good so cant see what else could be slowing it down?

Like i say I wasnt sure if it was fitting the roof rack or swapping the fuel pump. I have had it up to 70 without it before but was just making sure really that thats what it was and nothing more serious

Engines a bored out 2.5 Naturally asthmatic btw, better than the 2.25

Unless you really need to carry stuff they are a pain in the arse, took mine off and sold it.
With rack fitted I could not get in the tip or car parks and low branches caught on it. As for humping a spare wheel up there......

I think I'll take it off but keep it for when I go camping with my mates, not too hard to lift it up between 2 people. Will fit the wheel on the bonnet as well so will see how it compres and will put the figures here.

Suprisingly fuel economy seems oky, just under quarter of a tank got me over 70 miles
