Thanks for the reply - my friend has just come round with some diagnostic kit and the readings from the ECU seem very screwy not only is it collant eg -20c but it thinks the revs are 8,000 when idleying etc. as things like the ABS ECU were sensible readings i am wondering if it is the engine...
