I had the same problem when I got mine. I saw a relatively bad hole there and poked around and found a bigger hole:(. I had both sides done by a local mobile welder for £150 which I thought was a good price so £80 is a bargain by my reckoning.

The unit is only live when the ignition is on. Check the wiring from the switch forward, you may have a short.

Which fob have you got? If it is the 2 button you've got a "spider", 1 button fob no "spider"
