Td4 explodes on the M4

Freelander broke down again yesterday. Catastrophically for the third time (see signature for previous form...)

Mrs Widget was in lane 3 on the M4. Car lost power and lunched itself by blowing the rest of the oil out of the engine into the expansion tank, and then all down the side of the car.

This just takes the biscuit. We've had a catalogue of disasters over the past 2 years with this car. It's been fully maintained by LR dealers and had most of the major mechanical components replaced from engine, to gearbox and electrics.

I have put up with this poorly designed, under-developed and shoddily built excuse for a car on the basis of its capabilities and the green oval. I thought that 'it wouldn't happen to me', only other people's Freelanders were rubbish because they hadn't looked after it, or chosen badly second hand etc. Well it has happened to me - repeatedly.

I hope that the dealer will fix it under warranty, - whatever happens though it's going.

Good riddance.:( And to those of you who love your Freelanders - I know how you feel. But it's like playing Russian roulette with the bank balance.

Now, does anyone want to buy a well-loved and cared for Grey Freelander Td4 ES with tow-pack, fdsh and recent IRD. It is at the dealers at the moment but should be back soon. Nervous breakdown forces sale, and I've got used to walking everywhere anyway. :)
 
I can sympathise but the bank balance is still holding the sale of our Freelander off for a while yet. They are expensive to keep running when out of warrenty and we will be up for a trade-in on something that is non-LR next year me thinks

I couldn't agree with you more m8.This abortion of a motor car should have been scrapped before it was unleashed on an unsuspecting public.I have owned one of these crapbags for a year and without a shadow of a doubt it is the worst car I have ever had the misfortune to own.I have spent over £1500 on viscous couplings,centre bearings,UJs,radiator,new tyres,etc.This is without the work the previous owner had done,ie,new engine,ird,driveshafts,etc.All this on a car that has done 68,000 miles.The troubles do not end there......air con,rear window,sunroof,rear wiper.All have packed up in the last 2 months.I have looked after this car like no other,changing oils every 4,000 miles and general sevicing every 5,000.It is like going back in time with this sort of servicing,which in this day and age should be virtually non existent.How Land Rover can expect people to accept that there are no faults with this car is beyond the intelligence of a normal person.The model is a pile of crap and everyone that has had the misfortune to purchase one of these dodo's should have the full purchase price refunded by Land Rover,as no matter what you spend,or how careful you are it will change nothing........flyboy2

Actually the car was bought from a Land Rover mechanic who gave up on it.The engine blew up after the thermostat packed up and caused the head gasket to blow.I have the sevice history from Land Rover and it makes frightening reading,more like an obituary.The engine was replaced with a "modified type" (whatever that equates to)and I must admit has been faultless for 9,000 miles,but that does not excuse the rest of the car,such as Propshaft,Vicous coupling,Bearings,Radiator (actually rotted away),Vibration (changing the wheels from front to back completely cured this,after the local Land Rover dealer kept the car for 2 weeks and failed to find the fault),A/C,Rear window,Rear wiper,Sunroof,etc,etc.If I seem to be a little biased towards my Cherokee you will have to excuse me,but in comparison the Jeep has been to Spain 3 times in the last year with nothing more than a burst lower hose (cost £37).I treat this car as I would any car and it has never let me down.It has passed every MOT first time for the past 4 years without spending a penny on it and it still returns 28mpg regular as clockwork.I have no doubt that there are people out there who would disagree and own bad Cherokee's,but you can only speak as you find.Still it has been an experience owning a Freelander.

Hate to sound harsh but I couldnt agree more with MK6 Cortina/Sierra/Mondeo bloke

Just because the one you bought isn't up to scratch doesnt mean that every single one will be the same - I like this forum but tend to stay away as it can be so bloody negative! Yes there are people who have had problems with their cars on here and don't we bloody know it!! I know it must be a gutter if you have forked out for a car that has problems but try to bear in mind that the Freelander is still the best selling of all 4x4's in the UK.
It don't half get boring when the same people bring up the same problems over and over again - surely it would be more productive to use this forum to get some constructive advice, flog the motor for what you can and move on.
Dont get me wrong I am not unsympathetic - just bored!
 
OK so flopster's a repetitive moaning old bore. But I didn't resurrect this finely worded exocet of a ****togram about our former Freelander after 12 months in the annals of Landyzone-past.

I had a recent moan - but that's cos I'm so ****ed off with the lazy Freelander whingers who can't be arsed to do a basic forum thread search and ask the same ****-brained questions about the Freelander.

So good point Outlander, nicely explained Sierra quip to Flopkins btw.

Mondo - it's not about maintenance, some just self destruct despite the best attention.

Seriously though - I hope you don't take my ribbing as abusive old chap. It wouldn't be the same without the moaning shed. :)

PS Outlander - there wan't officially a Mk5 Cortina, it was called the Cortina 80.
 
Anyone know if it is possible to fit a Wartburg two stroke engine in a freelander.I hear it makes a great improvement,but has trouble with meeting the emissions test.Maybe a Reliant robin gearbox will pair up with it,along with a posi traction back axle.
