thats how my transfer gear looked

How many teeth is that one ? I've got a brand new cross drilled 26 spline one if needed

how do I check - as that gear has 9 teeth on it . I assume the other gear is the other side of the bearing?

Can I pull it out through that aperture , or do I have to delve inside?
I also assume that just replacing the intermediate gear wont be any good as the output shaft of the gearbox will be equally shagged?

All help appreciated.

usually both go ,300 tdi disco boxes are usually 28 tooth ,intermediate gear is driven by input gear and is supported by shaft with large nut , you cant normally pull input gear out of 1.222 boxes , without separating t/box from gear box some

That's turdy MHM!

At the very least you'd want to be pulling the transfer case off, replacing with a new input gear and hoping for the best your output splines are not too worn...
