Hi all, I just thought I would put up a quick message about how to sort out a faulty start motor on a D2, as we did Darrens earlier in the week.

Basically, if you come to start your D2 and you just get a click, it could be a flat battery but is often a faulty solenoid.

There is a firm on the internet and ebay that sells solenoid repair kits for about £11. This is quite important as the std LR fitted starter motor is a Nippon Denso - a really good quality unit - and should last the life of the vehicle. The solenoid being rebuildable makes this feasable. Once you have your repair kit in stock, here's how you proceed.

Ok things to know:

1. To remove the starter motor you need to undo 2 x 13mm bolts; one from the bottom and one from the side; plus a 15mm nut from the top.
If you don't know that it's a different size, you will struggle for a long time as it is well hidden to the eye. You'll need about a 9" extension to your socket to access the nut.
Also disconnect the position lead and a small spade connecter then carefully remove the unit.

2. To acces the solenoid you need to remove the three 8mm bolts holding the cover plate - it is lightly spring loaded so proceed with care. Then you are into the solenoid.

The kit vendor has excellent instructions with pictures so I won't go into details about that. The important thing is that for only £12 Darrens starter motor is now back up and running better than ever.

Here's a link to his Ebay advert:

Cheers all

Dave

PS The starter motor is tiny and light !!!!!

Done my mates a month or so back. Didn't know it was a different size nut at the top,no wonder we couldn't get it off ended up doing it in situ a bit fiddly but a good job done

I'd advise fitting a new starter Motor complete and check if the old one has diesel on it (I'm presuming it's a Diesel)
If so replace the fuel pressure regulator above it as it's probably dripping diesel onto it!

Good post, especially the top bolt advice....i did it too some time ago and struggled with it......and now i'll be impish: believe me if the starter motor is faulty u wont make it work by fixing the starter solenoid:D;):)

This is true, but on speaking to the company owner, he said he had spent 15 years rebuilding starter motors prior to starting on his own and he reckoned that 95% of the ones he did the solonoid was the only problem and that's why he started up selling them.

Mine hasn't missed a beat since I did it, and its got to be worth a tenner's punt and a couple of hours work before assuming that its knackered and spending a small fortune on a new one or re-conditioning.
