Hi,

I'm looking for help with setting up a cb radio to fit into my disco1.

Not sure of all the bits and piece needed to get going but i'm sure one of you fine chaps out there will give me some pointers on what's needed for a reasonable setup. :)

deasy Daisy queasy oh whatever he is called is flogging a hand held you can stick an ariel into, what about that?

if its just for laning and p&ps surely that will do, anything else you have your mobile for.

NO
a hand held will not do :(. driving with a handheld is dangerous, possibly illegal and difficult to use.
 
Ok you need:

1. A CB unit of your choice (cept or 27/81) complete with microphone, mounting bracket and power lead .. power lead may be fixed or plug in and should have no bigger than a 2A fuse.
2. An antenna tuned to 27Mhz. This can be mounted in many different ways to suit your needs, for instance, mag mount, gutter mount, mirror mount or good old fashioned surface mount.
3. Most antennae will come with co-ax already fitted with a PL259 plug. Usually anything up to 3 metres of cable, do NOT wrap the spare cable up in a tight coil as this will cause induction within the loops of the coil and therefore throw any SWR out the window.
4. A mic bracket if useful, but a small piece of velcro stuck to the buttom on the back of the mic will do just as well in partnership with the opposite type stuck anywhere of you choice.
5. A flat surface with sufficient space within the vehicle to mount your rig is useful, but by no means necessary.
6. A SWR meter, though strictly speaking you shouldn't NEED one.

First of all you need to think where you're going to be driving your Disco, If you're going to be doing some serious green lanes with overhanging branches, then a mag-mount / roof mount / mirror mount is no good for you, as the aerial will get wiped off quick style. Obviously if you're not going near over-hanging branches etc, then there's no problem.
I have a Disco and I mounted my aerial to a piece of bar that I bent & twisted to shape before welding it to the inside of the spare wheel carrier. You can buy one of these from ebay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Land-Rover-Discovery-antenna-aerial-mount-cb-ham-/190684188663 if you don't want to make your own.
Because the aerial is partially hidden behind the bodywork of the car with this type of mount, you need a long top-load aerial to be able to get the SWR to tune in. I can't remember the part number, but it's part of the DV27 family the one that we all use, it has a tight spring mount at it's base so the aerial can "bend" over without putting stain on anything, they are also easy to SWR in.
However, buy mounting the aerial at the rear of the car, the coax cable that comes with the aerial is not long enough, you will need to fit an extension piece (available) and you also need to learn how to solder on the PL259 plug correctly.
Mounting to CB itself is relatively easy, just pick a place to put it, then run fused power & earth to it.

mag mount from maplins the 7" one.they have a choice of areials.i got 2 diff size ones.
if going through alot of trees i use the smaller arieal.the cb i bought from maplins didnt need tunning in....i mounted mine on dash with some metal shaped and drilled to secure unit.didnt budge when offroading
 
TTI TCB660 Rig out of maplins, - about £60
SWR Meter from Maplins - about £ 12
Thunderpole Orbitor Ariel (x2) from Thunderpole - £ 15 Each, if i remember ... second one is only a dummy and isn't needed really.
Rear Ariel Mounts - from Thunderpole again, the one with the co-ax kit was about £6
the one for the 'dummy', about £ 3.50

I went for an external speaker as well.. but it didn't last long (£ 7 from Maplins ).. so chucked it and went for the H/D Version which i think was £8

Took about an hour to fit it all in, -- works a treat. :D

SWR of 1:1.2 at the Channel 1 end and 1:1.4 at channel 40, straight out the boxes... oh and remember to get a patch lead ( about £3 ) which you'll need for SWR-ing in.

Always pays to check the SWR ( Standing Wave Ratio )... cause you can bollox your setup, if it starts getting up near the 1:3 kind of region.

Maplins also do a relly neat 'basic' rig.. its a very neat size... not many 'features' but very functional...
for about £39. Daughters boyfriend got one, and he has had no hassle with it at all.
It doesn't 'scan', but so what ! ... we always use Ch4 to communicate between he and I,
so its no great loss to not have a scan feature... really neat small little unit it is. :D
Does everything it needs to.

its one of them must do things, fit one of my rigs in the disco..

had them for years, hence the question to buddah,
as we run a cb club in collier row romford well before it was "legal"

was called the ....pause, snigger now,

I got a good duel band rig, but I`ve never really used it, bought it about 10 years ago, got it out the box a few times, connected up in me shed, listened to silence or forign truckers, put it all away again.....yes, another must do thing.
