right, after a very successful improvised laning trip last sunday, it was decided we wanted to go back to a particular part this week. essentially im going to get **** faced on saturday evening so im only up for a leisurely one in the afternoon! therefore i suggest the following:

meet up fleet services (between junction 4 and 5 M3) 1pm. We can then go for a leisurely afternoon jaunt around the lanes we explored the other week, and check out the ones we didnt do! and go via the cliff also for some fun and games

add your name if you are up for going! if anyone wants to hitch hike - cough - let us know and im sure there will be space. it'll be worth coming, some of these lanes are pretty good. dont come if you dont want scratches! also would be a good idea to take off any roof racks because booger couldnt do a very fun little lane because of it.

I will come along if thats OK and someone can spare a seat. I also know quite a few lanes south of Basingstoke - nothing nasty - just a bit scratchy with the occasional "oeerrr missus" bits, if yu want me to bring along my mammory map.

I see you're looking for new tyres on the Herts thread - is what's holding you back???
 
bloody expensive!!

the problem with 110's is the rear salisbury, which sits lower than other diffs. so my current excuse for when i get stuck is the salisbury, which to be fair grounds out an aweful lot, good thing its bomb proof! im only running 235 mud terrains so it sits really quite low. wanna get some 33's or something!

was looking at the kumho's but im thinknig i may as well go the whole hog and get special track, silverstone xtreme's or grizzly claws!
 
ahh - i have my diff back by the way guys. so will have diff lock and low range for the descent woohoo!

works better than ever! and i have my left indicator working so you wont need to guess!
 
Oops - my bad! I meant to ask if it was the tyres that are the weak link in your off-road performance! :confused:

I hear you on the £££ for tyres - just shelled out for 5 Kumhos a month ago! Are you running 15" or 16" rims?
The 285/75R16 are 33" which I saw you make some reference to. I'm guessing those are a struggle to fit under a std 110 with no lift?

Funnily enough, I was having a little trawl around the internet to see if I could find some more extreme muds for playing - cheap & hardcore being the important aspects! I think the 285s are probably getting too wide for the very sloppy stuff as they start providing flotation rather than digging. On a big heavy Cruiser with ample power it's probably less of an issue than a 110 - something for you to think about perhaps.

My ideal mud tyre would be a 255/85 but it seems that only BFG and Cooper supplied them in the uk and now neither do any longer.... The 255/85 is 33" but obviously much narrower than the 285 (10" vs 11.3" I think). I reckon the Special Track in that size would be very tempting as a play tyre for me:) The Special Track is still not very cheap, despite it being remould... I guess I need to focus on wearing out the Kumhos rather than dreaming up more ways of spending money!

you know - 110's arent all that light! i dont know the exact weight but they arent exactly diet vehicles!
 
haha. gotta say mate, ive done the descent without diff lock and in high and i can tell you i wouldnt have minded them even if the other 2 to do it didnt find it helped much

you coming then? you wont wanna miss it, its a hundred times better and more challenging than the stuff we did!
 
I Would really like to join you lot, cause i've got the balls to try stupid things after mondays run i did!! But im off away for the week, will be at Whaddon though.
 
Hi mate, i'm still on for Whaddon but not sure about getting out this Sunday. Really want to get the engine back together on my V6 Mondeo and take it for a blast.

I agree on the taller, narrower tyres - my comment about weight is that narrower tyres will give better traction in mud than fatter ones. Wide tyres look nice and have their uses but they do give greater rolling resistance (heavier fuel consumption) and don't work as well as narrow tyres in mud.

33x10.5 would correspond with 255/85, so if you find some nice muds in that size, let me know too!

Looks like there's going to be a small turnout for Sunday....

It's good that they will be comfortable, because it may take an underpowered Land Rover hours to pull you out of that mud hole :D

I'm working on getting out there too, but have lots of dogs this weekend (and no one avail to babysit) But maybe I'll meet a buxom bosomed nymphomaniac who likes dogs on Sat night, and then she can watch the dogs on Sunday (after cooking me breakfast).

I guess I need to focus on wearing out the Kumhos rather than dreaming up more ways of spending money!

That makes sense, there are advantages and disadvantages to all tyres. I've just been thinking that my Kumo's might not be as good on a steep hill climb on a hard surface (like at core 4x4) as the AT2's I just got rid of, as they have less surface area on the ground due to the more spaced out tread.

And people knock wide tyres because they don't cut through mud as fast as narrow tyres, but what if the mud you are driving over is really deep with no hard bottom, then do you really want to be digging down as fast as possible?

Also if you plan to drive across the sahara, or the polar ice cap, then you do you really want narrow tyres?

In the Pari Dakar some teams used to use 7 different types of tyre during the race, so be assured that however much money you spend, there will be something your tyres will be no good for :D

I'm thinking two set of wheels and tyres are the way to go !

The hitch-hikers could be useful pushing me out too! Do you have any big enough dogs that could be roped in as huskies to pull too? Why not bring the dogs or even just leave them on their own? I presume they fend for themselves when you're at work?

Oh, and good luck with the nympho ;) As Pintsize says - "Make sure you take plenty of pics and vids, I want to see if anything falls off"
Maybe I should have left off the part about wanting to see if anything falls off! :D
