I would like to fit a lt230 to a p38 zf, is it as simple as changing the tailend and using FTC5090 straight on the output shaft to fit the LT230 on?

After some searching it looks like it is to me, what tailends can be used; D1, D2 and RRC?

thanks :D

Yes but there are two types of input bearing in the LT230 - if you have the later type you will need the correct gearbox output shaft which is 45 quid from Ashcroft - this has a 17mm nut on the end which you just undo and swap them.

Connect your gearbox and transfer box together - If it slides home then your bearing and shaft match - if it gets stuck 20mm from home you need to swap the shaft for the other type.

Do not rely on Transfer casing numbers - many early ones have been upgraded with the later input bearing - Ashcroft for instance fit it as standard now.

Also there is a shim behind adapter shaft-don't let it fall out if I remember it does governor

? theres only one input bearing and all input gears fit

Ok thanks for the advise :)

Im not sure what you mean, in adapter shaft you mean FTC5090.

I have removed the old tail piece and didnt see a shim...

what are you going to use to run box ecu wise

hopefully the P38 stuff or failing that the megashift looks good, failing that throw it all away and put a hydraulic zf in.

Any idea where i can find the tail piece or a part number?

There is a collar between the output adapter shaft and the governor, it holds the governor in place. If you leave it out you won't get far and the box will be scrap.

sorry James - you are wrong - from 1998-on the input bearing was cross-drilled and the output shaft from the later gearboxes was changed to fit it.

The later type is now used by most LT230 rebuilders because it runs much cooler.

So if you have coupling problems this is generally why.

If you don't believe me - ask Mr Dave Ashcroft - was him that told me when my rebuilt transfer box wouldn't couple up - so I phoned him - ''look in the f#####g box Victor - there is a new output shaft for your gearbox''

input gear you mean then ,bearings are all the same yes (frc5564) in late 90s they did start using cross drilled gears which have longer splines, so output shaft for rear of gear box needs the longer splines(ftc5090)but earlier non cross drilled will still fit later shaft ,cross drilling is usedd to supply oil to splines to stop contact wear prior oil thrower plate was used

Im struggling to find a rear housing for less than the price of a complete box.... if anyone has one id be interested
