ZF Transmissions

Well it doesn’t, actually. It stands for Zahnradfabrik Friedrichshafen which translates as “the toothed wheel maker of Friedrichshafen”. However, there is a Zeppelin connection as old Ferdinand established his factory in Friedrichshafen, which is a pretty town in the very south of Germany on Lake Constance, and ZF started off in business making gears for Zeppelin. There’s an interesting Zeppelin Museum there now :)

Have a good look at the ZF site, it quite clearly states ZF of Friedrichshafen is a private company and that ZF stands for the Zepelin Foundation who are, with one other, effectively the owners.:p

your zf will be easier ,there is a lr service product traing manual for classic and disco 1 ,which apart form govenor or rear and no solenoids ois basically the same box

Thanks for that James, I will modify my searches:) I know it's an old design that was modified from pure hydraulic control to electro/hydraulic control but I was hoping to find the proper manual.

No, you are going to have to help me out there. Where exactly does it state that ZF stands for Zeppelin Foundation?
If Zebedee Florence plc took them over tomorrow ZF would still stand for Zahnradfabrik Friedrichshafen.

The Dr.-Jürgen-Ulderup Foundation holds a 6.2% stake in the ZF Group, with the Zeppelin Foundation owning the remaining 93.8% of shares.

I may have been a little loose in my wording and you are right about the trading name, but ZF is owned by the Zeppelin Foundation and I think the trading name was chosen to represent that fact without the negative conotations of Zeppelin
 
i dont think they lr do manuals for later boxes as they stopped factory training in unit rebuilding years ago ,but earlier manual will do for what you need layout is identical,i had to rebuild a l322 transfer box the other day for our local dealer as they had no idea or info on how it was built or worked,if you do have a go yourself you wont want a rebuild kit just front gasket,filter ,sump seal ,oil pump housing seal 4 x seal for oilway to clutches and any parts that are faulty ,the parts are cheaper bought separately and not from zf ,i can give you suppliers numbers if needed,you generally find unless box has been severely overheated everything bar your problem will be perfect,nearly every one ive rebuilt has really only needed one way clutch and one or two of front clutches replacing,whereas before they were put on diesels just clutch A

Thanks again for the info James. It will be sometime before I get to the stage of having the box on the bench to dismantle. I will PM you if I may for part numbers/suppliers when needed.
My biggest worry is recognising the bits that have failed never having seen the inside of an auto box:eek:
