it will be quite obvious as cltch packs will be black or darkened as compared to light brown one way clutch if held between palms shoulkd only turn against it self one way,as they wear this becomes less definate and will move more before catching until it wears enough not to catch at all and spins either way,

James, you really are a great help, thanks. I'm always up for a challenge, I've rebuilt the simple gearbox on my club racer a few times, but the auto is that much more complicated. When the manual broke it was obvious like teeth missing, shaft broken etc. By comparison the bit of slip in my auto is quite subtle.

Well surprise surprise, I have actually had a reply to my enquiry from ZF themselves. It more or less confirms Jamesmartin's diagnosis which I was happy with anyway. I'm trying to get more info from them now I have a person to contact.
