Well, it is nearing the time to smash the piggy bank and soon source myself or rebuild my tired gearbox..
First thing when it's cold it hackles in reverse.
The rest of the day it's fine..
Oil level is good and clean.
Changed last March, two oil drops and the filter was done 10.000mls ago.
At 217.000mls I'm just a little concerned.
I would like to rebuild the box but km wandering seriously about a recon or a secondhand unit... < not my first choice...

Lucas Transmission Fix may help. I have a good working HP22 you can have if you want to help rip it out of the car

I did try the lucas slip, it then started shunting into third gear... I've since drained it out and got the smooth changes back... But the reverse problem has slowly gotten worse over the last three years.
It's the idea of being where if it gives up.
All forward drive is unaffected cold or hot, just reverse noise when cold...

Have you ever had any deposits in the sump?

It is very well known that clutch debris blocks the valvebody and solenoids rough changes are the first indicator..

eventually it'll start to flare when it changes..

Dropping the valvebody is quite simple, a chap on utube does it..

I've had to do it on mine ;) the 4p24 isn't immune to the issue either!

All reasonably clean on the oil drops and never anything alarming in the tin our 'enners.
Just the hackling noise when cold only and in reverse. The rest of the time when warm, it's a good.

Indicative of low line pressure when cold, more than likely valvebody related Mark ;)
next time the pan is down check the bolts that secure the valvebody and make sure they're all tight ;)

Could also be the reverse gear safety valve faulting, this is more of a squeak though!..

No chance that the parking pawl is not fully disengaging I suppose? Worth puling the lever down to 1st and then back to reverse to see if it makes a difference.
