Hi fountains of Freelander knowledge,
just had a xenon heaflight stop working

, does anyone know can I replace the bulb or does it need a whole new headlight unit?

They are replaceable, how to do it is in the owners handbook.
Avoid aftermarket cheap replacement bulbs, only use Philips or Osram replacement, and fit them in pairs as the light changes over time, making a single replacement look different to an old bulb.
