Hiya all,
I have Pirelli Scorpion ST on the front & Goodyear Wrangler HP on the rear, all of which are over half worn. I dont know if it makes any difference but I dont like having mis matched tyres but I dont know which to go for. Price is about the same as far as I can tell. I will only do about 5000 miles a year in this car as I have two other vehicles & not much off road but it will go off road occasionally. I also like the idea of BF Goodrich ATs too, any thoughts / opinions please?

you will receive a lot of mixed replies on this one, personally i like wranglers, but i know a lot of folks dont. pirelli make good hi speed tyres but not sure about their all terrains, bfg's are good off road but expensive. i wouldnt worry about having different manufactured tyres even though some folk will say you are heading for a fall in doing so. i was involved in the tyre industry for many years and i know for a fact it doesnt make any difference. if i were you i would leave them as is untill you need to replace then replace with the ones that last the longest if you are really that worried about having the same make on all four corners. dont forget your spare as well, remember if you want all the same, you wouldnt want an odd spare now would you ;)

I agree with Yella Ted,having them different front and back won't matter, on the same axle will! Personnally, I fink the wranglers are ****e, mileage on em is pony compared to the scorpions, I'm running them all round at the mo. If dosh was no object I'd probably be running michellins, if I was offroading loads I'd probably go for the BF's.

Hope this helps,

Bollix - it WILL matter if all four tyres dont have the same rolling road diameter. Tyres of the same size from diff manufacturers are not always the same size. on a motta like the hippoo which is prone to transmission wind up - ALWAYS use the same manuf on all 4 wheels.

or chance yu VCU!!!!!

Hold on Mad, if you're putting your besttyres with most tread on't front, surely they're gonna have a different diameter to those on't back, same type or not? Yes, I agree if the worn rears are a larger diameter than the new fronts yer gona fluff yer vcu and/or diff, but I can only see it being a prob if yer got 4 new tyres of two different makes aboard..stand to be corrected and as normal IMHO..

P.S Hugs ta ya Mad....:p

On MHMs F.A.Qs thread, he says that the Wranglers are good for 20 - 24k the BFGs for upto 50k? & Scorpions less than 10k. If this is the case, the BFGs ar probably the better bet, if I can find some 215/65x16s.
They look nice n chunky but are they noisy?

ta be honest on the early gaylander it made er difference but fink it was after 2001 they changed the ratios [drive] un after that dunt make ant difference weather worn was front or back. . .as long as they are not really worn one side un new tother [if ya see wot i mean]. . .

welcome back Cashew;)

the point i was tryin to make is..
if yu put new tyres on the front - but they are a smaller dia than the rears - yu will still get the same problem. Its worth checking rolling dia of ANY new tyres.

Hiya Hatters,
yer dead right & I totally agree, I'm just being pernickerty, we've just bin out thre times to the local fruit bat hospital, one of the patients keeps trying to abscond and finks hitting a break glass will get him out..

Funnytho, I find the reverse has been true for mileage of the boots, 24k ish for the scorpions and 10k ish for the wranglers..weird that, or its just that eyeties like me better than septics.....

Mads spot on ! Tyre makes DO make a difference. I had Pirrelli all round no problems, came to change a pair and put kumho KH 11 on the front, wow proper bad vibration put em on the back only got vibration at 65-70mph but the VCU was gettin hot. Bought another 2 Kumho so now got em on all 4 corners no vibrations at all sweet as a nut. Out of interest measured em and the Kumho was about 10mm larger which were foolin the VCU. Mines a 2001 TD4 ESX wi 225/55/17" allys

i had a 2002 td4 had general grabber at2 all round not noisey good grip even off road around eastnor and lasted well with road use about £70 each at the time
