Hi all,
I need some advise. I have 2017 DS with stretched timing chain with good picoscope result. Been to LR and 2 other speacialists. LR only wants to do timing chain but one of the specialists also wants to do flywheel and clutch stuff and some other stuff as they said it is adivisible as they are opening the engine and sounds pretty knowledgable about the issue. He also did some oil test to look for particles and dialusion for free. Cost is roughly same from all 3. Dont know which one to choose. Any advise would be appreciated.

The DMF & clutch are unlikely to be needed, DMF's do suffer if there is excessive timing chain stretch for an extended period of time, the clutch will be a 'while we're there...' item. Unless the engine has been rattling for a while and you've been feeling 'tip in, tip out' when you're on & off the throttle with the clutch released, DMF issues are very unlikely. Particles in the oil & dilution are separate issues to the chain - what is the other stuff?

Hi
Thanks for replying back. So far they want to get work done flywheels, DMF, concentric slabs cylinder, clutch kit. They wanted to do the these additional as advisory as they going to open up the engine. What’s your thought on getting job done by LR vs specialist? Almost same quotes but both the specialists are popular in the area. Oh, the the said specialist said some about custom made chains directly some factory with holes in it so they don’t slip or talked about something else. Did not want to sell me anything, just was having a discussion.

also 3rd gear feels like u need to push it in. Don’t know if that’s clutch issue. If sometimes dont push in it does not engage.

Well firstly, the 'flywheel' is the DMF, it's required to replace the clutch slave cylinder when the clutch pressure & friction plates are changed - and the engaging third gear could be a clutch issue (TBH, it's normally 1st gear that's problematic), it could also be a transmission issue with synchro wear / thrust washer being a possible cause.
'Custom timing chains' is a red flag to me - it'll still be a simplex chain (which is the issue - across several manufacturers so JLR are not unique in having timing chain wear concerns....) The chain will not 'slip', jump or otherwise lose timing relationship unless there is another component failure or timing chain rattle is ignored for a significant period of time, in which case, breakage is most likely to cause catastrophic engine failure, not chain slippage. Warranty will always be better if the job is done by a JLR dealer.
