I have a 2ltr 2001 freelander diesel auto & after a trip of about 25 miles when i rest it for about 15 mins it turns over but will not start so i have to open the bonnet & wait about 1/2 hour for it to cool before it will start, Any idea's what's wrong please.:confused:

Do cam position sensors fail slowly? On Sunday, twice I had difficulty re-starting when the engine was warm, but yesterday and today it was fine.

Intermittent faults are patented by Land Rover to confuse people.

Get a DTC read, if it wont start, its a good bet it logged PCM DTC's, everything else is speculation.

Being relatively new to my Freelander and having owned a nice simple, straightforward Disco for years, I don't have a clue what a PCM DTC is.

Well being hip and young, i get to confuse old people with new words :)

They changed ;

ECM (engine control module) to PCM (powertrain control module)

P-Codes (because they begin P-xxxx) to DTC (diagnostic trouble codes)

On the flipside i only ended up on this site as i found an engine with no wiring on it and suddenly felt stupid :) How do you diagnose an engine with lots of cables but no wires :)

Acronyms were invented to make other people feel stupid :)

:blabla:Just a guess from an amateur but low pressure fuel pump on its way out maybe??. In a no start situation "key on" but dont crank, you should hear the pump working from the drivers seat(switch radio and wife off so you can hear better) - its a sort of buzz or hum - if you dont hear it then it er...isnt.As far as I know a failing fuel pump wont give a DTC :blabla:

Failed pump gives : 'Low Side Fuel Pressure Sensor Plausability' Error

Since there is no sensors on the pump, the car gets pressure below what it requires at Ign2 (140kpa to start) and assumes the sensor is wrong :)

Re: the DTC diagnostics stuff.Most "faults" that might affect running or starting might not show up on the OBD& OBDII toys that most of us have. As far as I can tell only the issues that could affect emissions will will show up on a generic tool. Already having VAGCOM/VCDS,Vauxcheck and others for some of the cars in our household Iam not sure I want to spend the the £300 or so on Hawkeye or summat similar for the Land Rover. The impoverished masses, me included will have to rely on nous, knowledge (albeit limited) and perseverance to sort out the problems we come across, and if you have a Landy there will be plenty.We are not all techies but none of us are thick.Like the man said, when you eventually find the cause of the problem you realise it was staring you in the face all the time,so take the oscilloscope to the car boot sale and spend the proceeds on Capstan full strength that you can stick behind your ear (still lit)while staring, puzzled, into your lifeless engine bay...:D

:blabla:I agree (I think) if not enough fuel is being delivered to the injection pump from the LP pump the babysitter (fuel pressure sensor ) will kick off and go in to a huff and refuse to let the car start,sooooo, it could still be a fooked or lazy low pressure pump then????, maybe....???:blabla:pS,Anyway, I understand the only way to check if the fuel pressure sensor is "OK" is to replace with a known good one.. that is for for DIY purposes I mean, you could of course book in to the main agent and kiss goodbye to £2K and afterwards drive away with the same fault you arrived with... some have....not recommended from me tho...;):doh:

All very good but the most common reason for a td4 not too fire up when warm is the cam shaft sensor. Go and get yourself a can of freeze spray...go for a run turn it off and try and start it. If it wont start spray the cam sensor for about 10 seconds and try to restart.....if it starts cam sensor is fuuuucked!
