Typical schoolboy error, i was in such a rush when I disconnected it and now i've forgotten which wire goes where.

i've got the lighter with a brass pin in the middle and a steel one on the outer side of it. I've got three wires one black, one green, one red and white.
I know one is for the illumination but in terms of which one goes where i haven't got a clue can anyone shed any light please?

Black is the earth so will go to the steel connector, not sure which is for the illumination but a multi-tester will tell you if it goes live when you swich the lights on. it goes to the bulb holder remaining wire goes to centre pin.

cheers redhand, problem is I haven't got or can easily get me hands on a multi-tester.

Ok connect the red & white wire to the bulb holder if the light comes on when you turn the ignition on it's the wrong wire.
Or if you connect it to the centre pin and if the cig lighter only works when your lights are on it's the wrong way round.

cheers i'll give it a whirl.
i'm fookin useless when it comes to electrickery. ( actually most things when it comes down to it )

If you want a simple voltage tester get a spotlamp bulb and put the wire on the connector your testing. Earth the bulb, if it doesn't come on there's no voltage. :( . If it does come on you've got voltage :)

Right I've now put the red white to the bulb and the green to the brass pin. switched the side lights on and the cigarette lighter illuminates.
I'm guessing if i'd swapped the red/white with the green it wouldn't have worked?

you see the original problem is that the lighter doesn't seem to want to work in terms of charging up me sat nav, if i plug it into the missus's car it works no probs, but not in mine.

Couldn't be the lighter at fault could it? wouldn't have thought there was much to go wrong on one of them

red and white is your sidelight circuit

That little snippet of info I'd gleaned from the Haynes, but I still wasn't sure as nothing else seemed to conform.

Still it seems to have turned out ok, the cigarette lighter works ok which in itself has got to be a first. And after blowing the 2 amp fuse in the sat nav charger after my first attempt at re-wiring the lighter, the sat nav seems to work ok.
