I only mentioned the MOST orientation because you said "after you remove a plastic adaptor which clicks into place". If there's been water ingress to the Nokia module, it'll most likely have capillaried into the connector. Both modules will power up the MOST when power is applied but will shut down if there is no infotainment switched +ve -as you've discovered!
If it turns out there is low voltage on the switched +ve (<10VDC), it's likely to be corrosion in the wire itself. Rather than messing about tracing it you could always get a pig-tail to replace the connector in the housing and splice it in to the same wire on an adjacent module.

sound advice indeed...tomorrows first task is to do exactly that... and as for the poxy piece of plastic, only found out it was an attachment when the wife said it looks like it clips into place and better than that i've ordered a BMW plug to fit it. = makes me stupid and in need of a new pair of glasses..
 
UPDATE....Bmw mulf unit i received is phuqed so have ordered another unit.
Managed to contract a good dose on corona virus (which i don't recommend as i've felt like turd for the past 10 days) but will see what happens with the next unit...keep you posted when i know more..
