Hi all,

So my 110 failed its MOT (one of the reasons) because the tester wasn't happy with the beam pattern from my LED headlights - yes they are E marked etc.... The dipped does give a huge blob of white light to the center of the road and there should probably be a more significant difference between dipped and main.
So, went and quickly bought myself some WIPAC LEDs and this morning tried to fit. Obviously no instructions came with the lights and there were no connectors fitted - bit of a crap start for £420!

Used a 9V D cell to check the connections on the lights and wired them up.... and it's really screwy. Turn the lights on dipped = main comes on and the main indicator on the dash comes on. Only changing the drivers light at this time

Tried the old headlight and all was fine.

Tried the other headlight and all works fine.

So basically I think I've got a duff headlight and as it's sealed there's no way to check/change anything.

To pass the MOT I think I'm going to have to fit the old ****ty lights again if I can find them.....

Any advice?

I don't think I've got the relay problem. In the future (If I can get the dip/mains lights working) then I'll wire the halo ring to the side light.

At the moment as the other unit worked I think the first one I tried is just buggered :(

Old glass lights fitted for the MOT tomorrow - yet another thing to sort out later...

Right then, new lights fitted.

Straight away it's obvious that the WIPAC lights are a class above the Ebay specials. Even though the ebay ones were E marked etc. the light output was a complete blob, the WIPAC ones are just like a normal bowl/bulb, clear and distinct boundary. Going from £130 to £420 there's an obvious product improvement.

I took the time to wire the halo lights into the side light circuit (as per instructions) and they work nicely too.

I've yet to drive at night with them, so I'll give another update after that.

Not sure why the first ones I got didn't work, fault in the light somewhere, just got unlucky I guess.

Anyway, it's cold out there. I'm staying in the warm on my keyboard. I'll be out tomorrow night though, I won't forget to post neilly :)

So what you are basically saying is, you unfitted LED lamps to your vehicle that shouldn't have them and to my knowle4dge isnt road legal with them fitted and operational, fitted some legal ones to get through an MOT then refitted the LED's?

Sounds like the cheapo ones had the earth wired wrong, assuming the LEDs work both ways
I could put an E mark on, doesn't mean it's right or legal

So all 3 comments managed to get it wrong....

£120 light off ebay E marked, very bright.
fail MOT as beam pattern not distinct enough
fit old glass bowl lights to pass MOT
order new WIPAC (£420) LED lights as old ones ****e.
new WIPAC lights arrive but one is faulty.
have to wait two weeks getting another WIPAC set and driving with ****ty original lights
fit new new WIPAC lights and everything is great.

That is basically what you wrote above isn't it. Not sure how others got confused.

Cheers

Gotta love it, ;)

Have you tried them yet?

Cheers

not yet.... spent the day car shopping with the Mrs so had enough car stuff.

Picking up a newer passat to replace her current one tomorrow. As she's only just filled up a whole tank worth of fuel I just spend an hour with a puny little hand pump getting 30L out to top mine up with.... I stink of diesel now!
