P38A Windscreen clips BTR4428 -considering 3D printing some

Hi,

just a thought from left field but, as some parts are becoming harder (or impossible) to source, I was considering 3D printing some of these.

has anyone tried this with this part ? Or if I go ahead and CAD the thing up would anyone else be interested in them ?

Just think it might be a possible solution to the ‘obsolete parts’ issue which I’m coming across a fair bit.

Land Rover classics department are starting to cater to NLA items.

As for the windscreen clips, I bought some off ebay quite easily.

from what i've heard, i would expect the plastic to be the wrong sort and would end up snapping

I would be interested to try some. They will need to have enough strength & flexibility for the 4 way spider side to stay in place in the trim, but still allow them to be slid into place. How does printing plastic stand up the repeated cold nights & heating in the sun ?

Most LR parts suppliers list them as no longer available, although island-4x4 site says POA.

Yeah, I think a bit of trial and error with the materials to get the right combination of strength and flexibility will be needed.

I know these seem like a fairly trivial piece but there will be others and it seems like a good place to start.

I’ll try some and see how they go.

Not sure how accurate the scanning process is, but you might need to scan several examples to get a good size, especially if the prongs are bent slightly.

I was looking for someone with a printer, I know nothing about 3D printing, but the plastic looks brittle to me, you need a plastic like oily and with a bit of flex in it, or they will break and snap in the cold weather, something like a PVC

They are definitely getting a lot better than the first lot that came along and more reliable

yeah, it’s a strange mix of properties, it needs to be flexible but with enough rigidity to latch in the channel.
I was thinking TPE but that may be too bendy. A bit of trial and error required

I looked into it a few years agi, got as far as going to a 3D specialist, but the scan and set up was going to cost 60/70 pounds plus mats. I figure the material is a kind of polythene, like a walls ice cream tub

Might be worth posting the ebay link so they can buy some?

I managed to get brand new old stock from Belgium, the spare ones I have appear to be nylon. I was going to draw up the CAD file and buy a printer, havent got to it yet. As they are brand new measuring them for drawing is easy and accurate.

I took pictures and started to draw them
In CAD but a house move has shaken things up a wee bit ! -need to get back on it
