winches

The biggest problem with winches is lack of use. Peeps buy em, stick em on their landies, and 2 years later they get stuck and decide to use their winch. Only to find it's packed up and doesn't work. or they get really really stuck and fry the winch the first time they use it.

I'm a member of Hull4x4 and almost all there members have winches and they are constantly moaning that they, are ****e and have packed up when they were needed most.

redhand, so do tirfors(spelt rite?) deal with lack of use pretty well?i guess a good greasin now and again is genereally all the maintainance generally needed?

Yep all ya need to do with a tirfor is keep the cable lightly oiled. and because they're either in the shed or in the car, they're never exposed to the elements the way a winch is.

Oh and ya insurance won't care if you have one in the landy when you have a crash and haven't told them you have one.

good point on the insurance issue!do like th idea of it only bein used when i think i'd need it,cant quite see the point of havin a leccy one?even a reet expensive one!?

Call me unconventional, but I'd like a leccy winch with a tirfor as backup!

and a hi-lift as backup backup.

milemarker hydraulic and tirfor, reason cos hydraulics have been around for centurie's in one form or another and seldom fail if maintained, and so have we(ie tirfor=manual):D

they come up on ebay quite often, and some go for silly cheap money - i've had a few 5 tonners off there for less than £30 - one of which had only been used once and had a spare length with it

TIRFOR - WINCH - ALUMINIUM BODY, STEEL BAR - 10 M CABLE on eBay, also Winches, Lifting Tools, Industrial Tools, Business, Office Industrial (end time 30-Nov-08 18:36:50 GMT)
Old thread i know but hows comes the tirfors are going for such strong money now?they a victim of there own succes?Im searching tirfor, sealey grip hoist, jest hoist etc and cant find any for less than 50 notes!WONT USE IT ALOT SO AINT GONNA SPEND A FORTUNE ON IT! HAHAHAHAHAHA

Looks good but it'll need to be used with a snatch block cos it's the 1300kg one. the tu16 is the one to get if you can or even better the tu32. But thats an heavy bastid and they tend to sell for top money. If you want to bid on that one I can get it collected for you.

I could also collect if you want ... pass it on to whoever's going your way .. ;)
