im looking to buy a winch so i wanted to know what type, max pull weight etc is advised and which is the best winch for the money.
im looking to spend between 300-350. also what bumper to go with the winch is best?
help us out!
cheers

A Tirfors is rated as A SWL of 1.6tonnes or 3.2tonnes but it's pulling capacity is usually double that, add a snatchblock into the equation and a tirfor will happily pull 5 or 6 tonnes. More than enough to recover a stuck landrover.

Electric winches are a waste of money unless you invest in a husky or top of the range warn. If ya don't it'll fry solenoids, flatten batteries or just plain seize solid when ya need it most.

we use them to pull structral steel into line on site befre we concret into position heavy feckens but indestructable and easy to use

just to echo wot pikey just said the cheap leccy ones are cheap for a reason. I have one and I don't trust it anywhere near as much as a good quality winch. I try not to use it unless I have to because I know it's a matter of 'when' it fails and not 'if'.

If you don't know how to calculate line pulls and double up the capacity I would suggest going on a course before you injure yourself or others.

It is well worth the money to learn how to use and maintain your winch safely.

ter be honest i have dragged some serious ****e with tirfors on farms etc, yer just see it inch its way to safety all the time every time, worlds best i recon

yer why not, if im stuck the last thing i wanna do is hand crank would b much easier to push a button!
how come ur not a fan of ''leccy'' winches?
tirfers dont break down are virtually maintenace free (bit o oil/grease)can be used on other vehicles(handy when stuck 3 in a row on a lane and the motor at the front aint got a winch)
youll only ever by 1 so cost effective and no fecker steels them of yer landy

surely there must be somthing very similar for a fraction of the price? with warn are u not paying partly for the name?

go buy a cheap leccy one then if that's what you want

we'll pretend we didnt tell you to get a tirfor and we promise not to take the **** when you get stuck and you find your shiny (but very bling) leccy one doesnt work

I use the Hi-lift with a set of chains as my puller-outerer.

Can't afford a decent winch or a Tirfor. I'd agree that the cheap (<£300) winches are probably not going to take the hammer that the front of a Landrover gets. I'd rather rely on something simple that will always work than have a need for something that goes fizz, pop, **** off, when you really need it to go whirr, pull, whirr, pull .... ;)
