What about one of those big old hydraulic winches that utility companies used? You can get them on ebay for less than £350. I picked one up myself for £250. I havn't got round to fitting it yet, but it looks pretty heavy duty to me. Perhaps worth considering if you don't mind adding 100kg or so to your Landy.

they are built for hard work - but when something breaks or wears out where do you go for spares ?

......... peeps do appear to be quite adverse to a bit of manual labour - Tirfors arent that hard work

I have got an Extreme terrain 12000 lbs leccy one on mine and it has had a lot of use and never let me down it has even pulled my 90 with a fullyloaded trailer out must of been about 4 ton. It was brand new winch and bumper of ebay for £200

......... and never let me down

it will let you down, sooner or later - when you least expect it

and then what would you do ? - order a new solenoid ? - order a new drive motor ? .... the list goes on

hands up who's ever had a Tirfor let them down ?

just making the point that in't end of the day, its better to rely on somethin wiv no leccy and fewer movin parts as possible aye sean!

im looking to buy a winch so i wanted to know what type, max pull weight etc is advised and which is the best winch for the money.
im looking to spend between 300-350. also what bumper to go with the winch is best?
help us out!
cheers
hulo mate i spent 250 quid on an ebay jobby and built my own winch bumper . it lloks cool witch is what (honestly ) most peepes want . and it can pull stuff along nicley apart from that if u buy a new one every 5 years fer 15 years its still cheaper than buyin a warn so its up to you . and we carry a high lift n strops as insurance . but i guess fer pure functionality u wud have a tirfor . and if u wana spend some seroius toot u could buy 1 o them hydraulic tirfors !!have fun fella

If you've only got a cheapo electric winch or an old leaky hydraulic museum piece winch they'll still be very useful even if they pack up because you can just spool out the right amount of cable, then use a high lift on the end, instead of having to use loads of heavy adjustable chains.

In order of merit, I'd go for ...

1. Hydraulic winch
2. Decent electric winch
3. Tirfor
4. Cheapo electric winch
5. Hi-lift and chains.

Only reason I only use a Hi-lift & chains is price ... I'm feckin' skint and even a £200 winch is beyond the realms at the moment ... ;)

Having said that, an el-cheapo leccy winch, replaced every year for five years is probably cheaper than el expensivo winch replaced at five years ... ;)
