There is NO need to solder and crimp. If the correct crimp tool is used for the fittings, not only is soldering unnecessary, but can actually weaken a crimp joint because it does not allow the wire to flex at the interface with the connector, and can cause a high stress point.

Well, my stick welder had problems with crimped ends; they were heating up and annoying me, and I'm a bad enough welder not to need getting annoyed while doing it. So I soldered the ends on, and that sorted that on the spot.

If the cables are well-routed and so on, soldering the ends won't cause any trouble.

But, a good crimp should last a while, and then the water will get into it .... whereas water won't screw up a soldered joint.

All that means is that the fittings were not crimped correctly - i refer you to IPC-A-620A (Acceptability of Cable and Wire Harness Assemblies)

That may be, but I don't care for theories, specifications, standards or any other hypothetical crap like that, nor do I give a toss for HSE either.

I suspect most LandyZone enthusiasts share that sort of view. I will decide what I think is fit and proper around my place, and if anyone doesn't like it they can stay well clear, which will suit me just fine. Don't need any do-gooding assholes here.

The simple fact is, crimped ends should be fine, but whether they are or not, crimped ends that are also properly soldered WILL be fine, will also be better, and will last longer electrically. That is a fact. Full Stop.

Soldered ends may be more prone to fatigue failures of core wires, but that is easily prevented (as on my stick welder) by fitting a U-bolt on the welder's front panel through which the cables pass, thus creating only in-line strains on the cable ends, not stresses and strains at angles.

Seems to have worked for the last ten years anyway.
