Next on my list is a winch bumper, however some say they're not suitable for auto vehicles, some say they're not suitable for vehicles with aircon etc.

Does anyone know what it is that is in the way that would foul a winch bumper?

My Disco is a 3.9 ES V8 Auto with aircon.

I don't want to lose the aircon as it's very useful for drying out the damp carpets!

If anyone knows which winch bumpers do fit, I'd be grateful!

you get an aircon winch bumper, its got a bit at front of grill that winch goes in,instead of sitting behind grill, have a look on ebay theres plenty on there and you will get the idea.

I'm selling a First Four tubular shadow winch bumper - taken off a 1994 tdi Auto.
Retail is £375 new - this one I'll let go for £150 but it is slightly bent at one corner. Without bumping it further - it's in the For Sale section.

Problem is that the aircon bumpers sit real far forward. That's all good but an aircon vehicle will never make a great offroader because of the overhang.

I had to move my pipe cleaner manual box cooler up to the top of the grill, and had some flexible hoses made up from the box to the cooler to make room for the winch. Mine is 3.5 v8 with LT77S, but I dont have the aircon bits so once the pipe cleaner cooler was moved, it was spacious in there.

Do what you want with that information! :D

Because air conditioned air is dried air, and literally grabs the moisture out of the carpets.

The problem is that the dry air in the cabin is no good for the wet soggy underlay which is holding 2 gallon of water underneath the rubber lining!

The air is dried because it is chilled as it passes through the evaporator, and that chilling condenses a lot of water out of the air. So it comes out ya vents cool and dry. That's why it makes your eyes hurt a bit when you've had it blasting for ages!

Also, if you leave a big german car (typically) standing with the aircon on max cold for a while you'll have a large puddle of water underneath from the condensate drain because they (typically) have a large aircon unit and remove a lot of water from the air!

My area of expertise is Sportscars and I often get asked why bother with ac in an open top car/in the uk and I think it's most useful in a car that's likely to get wet inside- it's the most effective way of demisting windows.... As for the carpets in a disco, if i'd wanted something purely as an offroader I'd have got a '90 or use my Crm 250 but part of the beauty of the disco for me is it's multi roll ability- I need it to be able to tow a 3 tonne trailer in comfort for hundreds of miles, carry 7 people and contain a wet, muddy, ADHD German shepherd. I also need to be able to ferry customers around and pick up heavy and bulky car parts, all of which it's pretty good at :D
