Hi everyone, I'm planning on having some winch bumpers fabricated to my specifications, after an eternity of measuring, drawing, re-measuring and re-drawing countless times!
The winch bumper I'm making, has the look of a standard Defender bumper. it even accommodates the genuine LR ruber end caps! The bumper will be mounted on the four holes at the ends of the chassis legs. The plate which the winch is bolted to extends to the underside of the chassis crossmember. it is actually bolted to the crossmember, with a bracing bar. this means that the winch is supported both at the front and ear of its body, and is protected from damage by the 6mm steel base plate. The entire bumper will be made in 6mm mild steel, will be braced internally, and will be galvanised and powder coated. The bracing plates, will have holes to allow for wax-oyling / cleaning. There will be two holes on the front of the bumper, along with two steel spacer blocks to allow the LR genuine Polyurethane A-Bar to be fitted much more securely than standard. This means you dont have to use the tatty flimsy brackets which rust away to nothing. if you dont have the A-Bar, blanking bolts will be provided.
The bumper will look exactly the same as the original LR part, apart from the small difference in size. This bumper will sit 20mm further forward than the standard one.
The winch fairlead (solid steel type, not roller)will have a cover, which is held in place on the bumper by two quick release pip-pins. This cover will be made of steel again, and will be large enough to mount a registration plate. This also serves to hide the front of the winch from passers by. The cover is rapidly removed to access the winch hook and fairlead.
The design of the bumper means that the winch sits quite far into the Defender, necessitating a cut to the panel, underneath the grill. The benefit is that the winch is hidden away from prying eyes and it sits much closer to the vehicles centre of gravity.
The bumper is designed to fit a Warn 9.5xp, but may fit any other winch of that style.
I'm having one made for me, but would be interested in any thoughts feedback, or if anybody else would be interested in buying one.
I understand that this bumper may not suit the hard-core winch challenge drivers, but it is aimed at people who want to have the benefits of having a winch fitted, but without it being on show all the time, and housed in an unsightly bumper which looks as though it was made from a ton of scaffolding! The bumper will look the same as when the car left the factory, only it will be a hell of a lot stronger!
