will this fail an MOT?

My trailer light has recently started to flash more than once when im indicating and sometimes stays on for about 30 seconds. Will it flashing more than once make it fail the MOT test? The cars due an MOT on the 9th of March.

My trailer light was on all the time on my old 300tdi and passed its mot.

Do the trailer lights work as they should ???

If not take off the tow ball,
trailer lights are now or soon to be on the mot

my brother had his tested on mot.But im sure an advisary on first ticket then next year fail if not fixed

Careful with that. The way I read it was that any of the new items on the test that failed up until the end of March could be an advisory. Then they're a fail.

How do they actually work on old defenders? Is it just the load on the circuit which is obviously more when a trailer is attached? I was wondering this yesterday because I have indicators on my roof and now when I put the hazards on the trailer light flashes.

All the dashboard lights are supposed to work s described, if I understand the new regs correctly.

If I'm right you'll get a pass on the 9th March, with an advisory for next year, if I'm wrong you'll get a pass and no advisory for next year.

Make sure you do get it tested before April 1st mind

My car will be going in early for sure, I'd rather have 12 months to sort out any minor niggles than a bill to get them fixed quickly

The trailer tell tale should of always flashed with the hazards as the tell tale works by the load, More load makes it flash thus when you have your hazards on it thinks its got a trailer.

As for the MOT they are not testing 7 pin for working order just security and condition yet but they are 13 pins, This means you could remove the bulb,

Sounds like you might have a short some where thus drawing more power, Check all your connections and bulbs

Thanks everyone.Yes, it was the dash light i was on about.I checked all the wires i could see for any loose ones but they all seemed well connected.Ill check more tomorrow.I'd heard about changes to the MOT to do with towbar electrics but i don't know what they mean.I'm mechanically clueless but i'm skint so i'm having to learn

I only just found out the trailer light was supposed to flash once when indicating when i searched some posts about the light staying on.I don't know how,but i never noticed it flashing before till it stayed on. I've done a search on here and it suggests checking a relay next behind the centre fusebox to see if it "clicks" or not.I'll check it tomorrow and if it doesn't "click" then i need a new relay. Is that right about a relay being broken if it doesn't "click".

Either the coil in the relay is burnt out (the relay is broken) or there is no power to the coil.

A relay is a simple magnet activated switch, apply electricity to the coil, it becommes magnetised and pulls the heavy duty conductors together.

Basically it allows you to switch high levels of current without risking burning out the bit you put your finger on

So, check there are 12 volts to the relay before buying a new relay

A multi meter is available from Halfords for around £15, well worth the money.
