I've seen two later p38's around the 2000yr mark with blown diff bearings.. I get thw impression some corners were cut later on towards the end
I agree with Data: most likely VCU failed and overstressed the diffs.

Yep a cooked VCU will knacker the front pinion bearing..
The final drive units themselves are quite strong from what I've put mine through.

Mine was noisy and got worse and worse then BANG!!
I just pushed it too far, it has lasted 12 months being noisy and I was getting my lad to fit another the day before but things happened and it was planned to get fitted the day after as I had an urgent job I had to do but it never made it......lol
I have a diff that I am putting in but am looking for another as it's not right (well useable) but not up to my standard.
