Why oh why!!?? UJ Woes...

So, as I'm getting Scratchy a nice shiny x-brake and the prop was half off I thought I'd go the whole hog and do the UJ's. I mean, how hard could it be.

Called MO4x4, got em ordered (£6.50 each fer decent ones, canna be bad...)

So, then the usual peruse of Buster's photo fred and off I went.

After nearly three hours I've managed to get one swivel apart, shattered a(n old) socket into a million pieces, broke a vice, snapped my circlip pliers and used all of my hammers! Even the biggest of the big-uns.

I should've guessed when I had real problems getting the circlips off, they're so well corroded in. Managed (eventually) to get all but two halves out - the two halves that are stuck just had to be on opposites of the same swivel...

Tried bashing as per Buster's fred, to no avail what-so-ever. So I put the joint (not that type of joint :smokin

in the vice, wound it in and tappety tapped with a hammer. Then hit it hard and it moved. Moved it back 'n forward and after a fair bit of wacking it came out.

None of the others will budge a fraction of a mil though, and I've managed to shear and M12 bolt in my vice.

Pub now. Big drill and angle grinder in the am...

the best way to get the old ujs off dom is to just put an angle grinder thru them it saves all that fookin about.

and before u put the new ujs in give the holes on the prop a good clean up with emery paper just makes things a tad easier to go in

I second that, if you have been giving the uj,s a bash just make sure there are no burrs and give the holes a good clean & emery and dry fit the bearing cups first to check.

Try doing it in te field with only a hammer and an old shackle!

Fill caps with grease to keep all rollers in place when replacing.

No sadly never in the military when I Say field I mean out on a hillside miles from home. I change one when i was miles from home. Brits woulda probably driven on it or took it off.

Did a bit in afghan Gardez kabul building police stations and security work for a while as a PMC working for Dyn etc.

My forts eggshatly, now. But I wanta get 'im up and running again today so I'm going to persevere...

Took the prop round to my mate's workshop and stuck it in his 12 ton press - managed to get the swivel out just far enough to get a small grinder in and cut through. Then needed all 12 tons to push the other side back through.

Then cut what was left of the UJs of the props. And again used all 12 tons in the press to push the caps out - they was well in there!

To add to the fun I had to prise the remains of the circlips out, right old fiddle with my smallest wee chisel.

Now everything's going to need a good file and emery back to shinyness.

One problem, there's a bit of damage to the rubber dust cover - will this cause a problem later? I'll make sure it's well stuffed full of grease before it goes back on...

How did you get on mate? I'm just doing mine now! Mine were well worn, gave them half a day in an acid tank before having a go at them. The cir clips wernt too bad, had to chisel couple of them out. I just had a small socket on one side bigger one on the other and put it in the vice! Did take a fair old tug but it banged out! was a pain getting the right sized ones to fit!

Hmmm, yeah, getting the rights ones. Trying to get 82mil UJs into 75mil yokes doesn't work. I went by the chassis number but obviously the props been changed...

It took some effort to get the buggers back in. I think the yokes had been squished a fraction of a mil with the 12 tons that was needed to get the caps out. So it was a scaf pole on my big vice and everything I could give it to squeeze them in. Even then I had to persuade the circlips in by filing a bit of edge on 'em and tapping them in with the little chisel.

I'll be driving up to norf Dorset later and I'll let you know what happens when it all falls apart!
