Well just make sure you approach it camly, there may be an innocent explantation you never know :). But well done for being throrough.

Before you go in all guns blazing it might be worth doing a bit of a 'miss marple' give garage a ring and ask for mot certificate number, v5 number and full reg and vin.(just tell them you are doing own hpi) Go on vosa website and do a free mot check. (You can look at every mot including recorded mileage and any advisories.
It pays to do a 'proper' hpi check too. Although they aren't 100% they do offer a £10,000 guarantee if it turns out to be clocked/stolen/financed etc. worth £20 as an insurance. If anything comes up, walk away. No car is worth the hassle.

Years ago, I bought a golf gti when I first left the army. Bargain price..... turned out to be cat d, finance outstanding and had drug dealer markers against it! (First I knew was plod pulling me twice in one night and being somewhat 'robust' ) car ended up costing me a fortune to keep it (black horse wanted it back) I took a massive hit even after sorting it all. I would never buy a car without factoring in the £20 to do a hpi now ( don't take garages word for it either. ) the golf was 'hpi clear'

Good luck!

Presumably you only need the V5 Number, Index and VIN?

Just had a go at it. You need V5 or an MOT in addition to the Index Number.

I was surprised to see that mine failed its 2nd MOT due to:

Nearside Stop lamp not working (1.2.1b)
Offside Stop lamp not working (1.2.1b)
Nearside Track rod end ball joint has excessive play (2.2.B.1f)

I guess I'd better go and have a look at the Offside Track rod end ball joint.

Is it not a little odd that the DVLA would have a record of two milages just 8 weeks apart? Checking the milage from MOT's is not fool proof either, it relys on the tester inputing the correct milage. The year before last the tester added 10,000 miles to my bike and I only noticed at its next one.

i did contact the garage about it and he rang me back and said that the info i had was a input error by the dvla!

i have checked the mots mileage and they do follow on!

but where has the info from the 78888 come from? i did think that it came from the mots?

my thoughts are what if it was clocked just before a mot!

but i must say the car is mint a looks like one thats done 52k.

i can have my money back!

we need to decide tonight what we are doing having it or getting our money back!

Hi, I have worked for a company that supplies mileage info before, it is worth bearing in mind that the mileage data is often entered by mechanics at MOT time manually, and by people on the V5 when you sell the car, the anomalies you see are more warnings for you to investigate, not necessarily a problem, but worth checking out.

I didn't mean to sound like mr doom and gloom! If everything else checks out after doing a full hpi, then bite the bullet. After all once it's on the drive you will soon have other things to worry about ;-)

Haahahaha he's not wrong :D!!!

Does sound like it could be purely an error on the MOT tester's behalf.....
As a tester myself I come across similar scenario's all the time, as shameful as it sounds i'm forever coming across testers who don't even know near side from off side and so on....... Scary

Hello,

just a quick note from us here at CarweB who run iTextCheck and iCarCheck.

The mileage data comes from Experian, who in turn get it from 5 commercial sources including the DVLA (the voluntary bit you put on the log book). There is NO MOT DATA in there currently as VOSA have not released this for commercial use yet (soon though)

If you PM me the reg I can tell you the sources the records came from.

Hope this helps.

i had a m8 this happen to but he had MOT done on his classic mini says 50000miles on paper work he said he never looked at it just happy it passed the next yr the same place for mot and they kicked off at him as the car had 42000 on the clock mot center called the police took weeks to sort out and in the end was down to tester input 1st time was wrong

Yes you are right this is very common on the MOT input screen, and currently VOSA have to way to clean it up so it will most likely be left to us as commercial companies to find a way to present the data to consumers without setting off too many alarm bells! Its going to be a tricky one but ultimately should stamp out the clocking companies once and for good.
