Why does heater suddenly start blowing cold?

Today I was driving on the motorway, the external temperature was 2 degrees and the climate control was set at 20 (on both sides).

The heater vents were blowing out nice warm air when suddenly they started blowing cold air. This also happened yesterday. The engine temperature gauge was fine.

I had to turn the temperature up to get warm air blowing again.

Does anyone have any clues why this might happen, where I should start checking?

Was it blowing ice cold?

My mondeo has climate and after the initial toasty hot warm-up, it shuts down to the 21c that i have it set on, this feels cold compared to the hot blast and i have to turn it up sometimes just to get warm. I think although 21c is quite warm, being in a car in icy weather it feels cold.

Mine heats up to interior temperature (usually 19c), then blows cold for a while. Thinking there was something wrong I used a digital thermometer to check the temperature, it was still 19c even though it felt colder. Not sure where the interior sensors are located but I would imagine they would be quite low down, hence why you would get a blast of (apparent) cold air.

Nigel.
