I suppose the main reason was the S3 we had last winter wasn't much fun?
I can respect it as a tool, but as a daily driver it didn't impress.... You couldn't have a conversation above 25mph for the diesel clatter. It destroyed my back - took 6 months to recover and it was ice cold all the time.

After looking at almost 30 examples at all sorts of prices we settled on our new '95 Discovery 1, mostly because it has never been welded, nor does it need it having been garaged all it's life and also because it has full history. The fact it happens to be a top spec V8 ES with a few extra options on it - rear a/c for starters - never knew you could even get that?!

I bought one because I've had one before and it was a good towing vehicle and economical.

The one I bought last March is a 99 300tdi and is has been reliable but is needing care and attention now.
I'm enjoying replacing the brakes and bearings and everything else that's rotting away because it spent some time by the sea.
Never buy a car from the seaside was one of my rules but I did and am paying the price but hey, its something to do and it'll be a cracker when I've finished if the body dont rot away first:D

Bought our first Disco in 2006, it was a 1996 V8 ES on a P plate because we needed a 7 seater and didnt want to go MPV, had her for 4 years and to be fair she was faultless, drove well and nothing broke and apart from the usual service consumables was easy on the pocket, sold her in 2010 (wish id never sold it) and bought a 1998 diesel XS which was the biggest bag of ****e ive ever had the misfortune to own and by pure luck a lorry wrote it off in a carpark so in the end i got more than i paid for it off the insurance company, was looking for a P38 as fancied a Range Rover this time but didnt find one that ticked all the boxes so i bought the 1999 V8 ES with LPG that i have now, its a good one and ive known it from new so knew its history (was me dads) and apart from the 3 amigos coming on which was the ABS Sensor its been faultless since owning it, Im going to put the airbags back on as running on coils and retro fit telly screens in headrests to keep the kids quiet on long journeys, so there you have it, im on me 3rd disco, 2 good ones and a bad one :D
 
because the cyclists were making a real mess of my old peugeot bonnet (particularly, the one's that ride 2 abreast or down the middle of the road preventing anyone from passing). No such problems in the Discovery -especially with the bars. Also, the wing mirrors are strong and cheap.... unlike, it would seem, those on the on the X5 driven by the tw*t drivng towards you on the wrong side of the road.
 
Had one 10 years ago and always said I would have one again.... Now i have a Family and a dog, shooting and fishing tackle to cart around so I found a good reason to get another!!!! Plus 50/50 with SVO has reduced my running costs.
 
Into alsorts of outdoor pursuits, the places I go and things I do - a car's just not built for it. Had a 300tdi laner a few years ago but had to sell for various reasons, knew I'd regret it!

So here I am with a recently acquired td5, got the cdl up and running so far, just want some slightly bigger, more capable tyres now - it's in too good condition for laneing, seen a fair bit of mud already though and I'm very happy with how it's doing, plenty good enough for what I bought it for :)
 
For a green laner, there is no better option if not going for the serious stuff.

Warmer and more comfortable than a defender and a third the price!
 
Great all rounder works on the farm, tows huge weights, takes me to the shops and on holiday,cheap to run, reliable, part of the family be lost without it
