Why are defenders so slow?

As the title says really. My 300tdi does about 70mph tops, maybe more if I had a long enough straight but I can never imagine a disco topping out at that sort of speed? Or am I wrong?
Dont Get me wrong, I never bought my defender to go fast, but just curious thats all. Bloody noisy too aint they! Still love it though and so glad I bought it.

Because the shape resembles that of a brick...
and they were designed for doing 30mph Anywhere! Not 100mph on nice smooth tarmac.

defender 1. 4 t/box disco 1.2 rrc 1.2, as a rule of thumb thers 20 mph between ratios 1.6 70 ,1.4 90 ,1.2 110 ish, a good upgrade is borwarner fromm rrc as has the higher ratio and allready locked centre diff with viscous to enable cornering without wind up

defenders usually have lower ratio boxes than discos, if you do a lot of motorway miles then a common swap is the discovery transfer box which will give you a quieter/lower rpm cruising speed.

But like has already been said you have the aerodynamics of a house brick so its never gonna be too comfortable at higher speeds.

:5biagree:

rarely do over 60 and with the new tyres on it keeps the revs low enough to help with fuel and noise. Saying that I had a habit of driving the disco around the same speed too.

Fink im gettin old :p

New ones aren't :) my tdci will cruise at 70 all day long and nice and quiet! Gets there pretty sharpish too! Will even cruise at 80 if you really want to but I dread to think what fuels like then!

This is a very simple answer. They are a work horse not a flippin race horse, Can't get it any simpler for you to understand :D:D:D

What does the tire size ( the outside diameter) do to the acceleration of the defender when its different than factory size? and over all performance?

I did notice a slower acceleration when I put 235/85's on but was'nt bothered about that as my fuel economy was better and cruised on motorways at 65/70 no problem

If a diesel is too slow get a V8 , but the wallet will suffer , speed needs power ,power uses fuel thats the inevitable.

I aint bothered by it being slow. Dont travel far in it anyway. Was just curious as to why they were sluggish compared to a disco. Quite enjoy driving around with a nice queue of traffic behind me!!!
