Not been here for a while, but need a bit of advice.

Firstly: When I started her up the other morning, she chucked out a fair bit of black smoke which then stopped. I then blipped the throttle which sent out another cloud of smoke :confused:. So I watched in the mirror as I slowly brought up the revs, and it was throwing out smoke, it then juddered quite a bit, then everything was fine.:confused:

Been fine ever since.

Secondly: She's developed a ticking noise when lifting off at high revs. So when accelerating you go to change gear, and when you lift off theres a ticking noise. "ticking" is the best was to describe it.

I dropped into Challenger 4x4 who took a quick look but didnt have time to drive it or anything like that. When he started it, he reckoned he heard what sounded like a bit of air in the system, so he reckons it might need some new copper washers round the injectors. Could this have caused the smoke??

Thanks

Adsey (Sorry for long post)

if yr landy doesnt smoke you can send it to your local main stealer who can service it for you and will come back smooking like a trooper..

most tdi landys i know have a puff of black smoke on start up which then dissappears, not familier with the td5 tho

TD5 only has four glow plugs so when starting from cold will often puff smoke until no.5 cylinder (back of engine) kicks in.
Ticking could well be an injector washer especially if it goes once the engine warms up.
If one or more are leaking then you will be down on compression so could cause smoke.
Change them all and the injector O rings while you're doing it.
Make sure you dont have a loose glow plug as this will also cause low compression.

I was hoping you'd come to the rescue shifty. Long time no see, haven't been on here much. How's things?

Anyway I know what you mean about the first puff of smoke, but this was alot more than that, along with the juddering.

This ticking noise is really starting to p*ss me off. Took her out today, drove it quite hard, not a single sound. Revved sweetly and smoothly right to the top end.

Although i still maintain theres a little more knock on tickover

If it is injector washers going, im not going to end up with diesel in the oil am I???? As you told me the consequences of that :( :(

Oh and i think i've noticed a tiny amount of oil has appeared in the red ecu connector.

Going through this at the moment, if your not sure just compare it to the black connector it should be spotless. If you only have a very small amount then its only just started, I changed the injector harness last week and its not a hard job. However the oil that was already in the engine harness is still wicking its way down to the ecu. I know of no fast way to flush it out, I have the ecu taken out at the moment and the red connector is draining into a jar and will leave it there for the long weekend hopfully by monday evening it will have cleared it all out.

A dodgy injector washer will cause the injector O ring to break down and let diesel into the engine oil.
The O rings are not designed to withstand the pressures and temperatures generated by the cylinders during compression. They will initialy suffer blow by of the hot gases and eventually burn away or turn hard allowing diesel at 60 psi into the engine oil.
Keep an eye on your engine oil level. If it starts to rise by even a small amount then you have a problem.
Oil in the ECU plugs and harness can cause intermittent misfires (felt as juddering) and eventually the motor wont fire or run at all. Take the ECU out and give the connectors a good flushing. I used meths.
The loom is a bit harder to clean but it just takes time. Peel back the loom binding for an inch or so at the injector harness plug end (near the cylinder head) and the ECU plug end, separate the wires and it should stop any further wicking into the ECU plug. Eventually the oil will stop draining out of the loom.

Cheers Shifty,

I don't really have much evidence that the washers do need doing, but If they do I think I'm going to have to do it myself. How do I get the injector's out without the special tool, and isn't there a complicated process of resetting or something when refitting them.

Im going to have to dig out that RAVE cd I have ....... somewhere

Not as hard as it sounds.
I used a small six inch pry bar to lift the injectors from their seats. Take your time and they will come out.
Do them one at a time as they are coded to the ECU.
The only adjustment is the rocker screw which is simple. Screw it down gently until it bottoms out then undo one turn before locking it off.
