Currently in the process of buying a freelander 2, 2.2 diesel! Upon viewing test drive the car it all seemed to drive well with no knocks or bangs. Upon taking the filler cap off when car is running their seems to be white smoke puffing from it...no oil from dip stick area if being forced up can someone please inform me what this could be so I can mention it to the garage thanks in advance

It's got an oil leak? Have you checked underneath. If it's not showing any oil there's an explanation. Unless the filler cap has emulsified oil (mayo) the steam is just vapours and indicative of no oil!

No oil was underneath the car neither could I see any leak on inspection of the engine bay, no mayo was present on or in the coolant or on the cap...totally stumped as I can't seem to find a straight answer...what has popped up abit is the breather filter? I would like to rule out anything major before making the purchase...

IF you live near , ask your fave local indy to look at it, or ask if seller minds you taking it to him/her to have a quick look. Either way you get a quick on the spot, eyes on, answer.
Also as it is a garage, check the warranty, with a fine tooth comb, to see what is and isn't covered. Just in case you do buy it and something is wrong.

Thanks for the advice and I'm hoping I can take it to garage before I sign anything as you mentioned!

Crankcase breather system might be the problem if the filter has popped up. Time to take it to the garage as posted. Freelancers not my strong point. Give me a 30 years old petrol 2.25L ! Still can't understand the lack of oil.
