need help please smoke coming out of the oil filler cap and knocking sound. Car has all her power but the sound is very annoying, any ideas what could be the problem!
cheers but could you be specificIt's had it !
I understand your point but it wouldn't run and drive so well if the crank had snapped! I only hear the slight knocking sound when the music is off. there's no smoke from the exhaust no delay in speed and goes like a rocketIs it the same Tdv6 that is in the Disco?
If so they have a habit of snaping the crankshaft.

cheers mateWhen you said knocking I was imagining a loud knocking noise.
All a bit irrelevant now since we are talking about different engines.
As a side note they still run with snapped crank, apparently.
Since I don't have a Range Rover probably best to wait for someone else to answer who has experience with that engine.
D3, d4 and L320 range rover sport all shared the same 2.7/3.0 v6 diesel engines.
Not at all me mon, same engines were used in disco and rrs, 2.7 and 3.0All a bit irrelevant now since we are talking about different engines.
sounds like the top of the engine, no codes but i had an oil pump gasket change and thats when all the noise startedD3, d4 and L320 range rover sport all shared the same 2.7/3.0 v6 diesel engines.
They snap cranks, slip bearings etc. Can run still but hopefully yours is OK.
Is the knocking top or bottom of the engine?
Does it increase with revs?
Have you had any codes pulled?
Has there been any work carried out recently?
Has it had a cambelt and oil pump change in your ownership? Oil pump should be ok anyway if its later 3.0 sdv6 i think.
I was at a local specialist the other day, lady was there with same car/engine as you. Wasn't knocking but definite taptaptap on idle. Sounded awful. Smoking like fùck. She drove it there and back home. Specialist diagnosed broken crankshaft...
oh and i put petrol in a diesel car and it sat for 8 months looooolsounds like the top of the engine, no codes but i had an oil pump gasket change and thats when all the noise started
yes i changed the cambelt at mileage service and then another garage done the oil pump gasket because it started leaking badly after the petrol was removed the carsounds like the top of the engine, no codes but i had an oil pump gasket change and thats when all the noise started
sorry about that.....its the same vehicle and the persons garage was recommended but seems he was a cowboy! I've been running it like for about 6 months but the noise is gradually getting louder. My initial thought was the timing was out but the garage said its the injectors because of the wrong fuel!Right, maybe they buggered the timing up. If oil pump comes off, timing has to be locked at the flywheel as well as camshafts I think so starter has to come off.
Who did the work for you? Have you taken it back since?
Is this first time its ran since misfueling or was that a diff car?
You need to give as much detail as possible with everything that could be related
I'll tag @lynall @tyregeezer @Nodge68 @gstuart see if they want to get involved
Take time to read any comments and please give as much detail as you can
You've been running it for 6 months with it knocking?! braver man than me, shouldn't be crank at leastsorry about that.....its the same vehicle and the persons garage was recommended but seems he was a cowboy! If its noisy, use a mechanics stethoscope to locate where the noise is coming from Top/Bottom/Left/Right/Front/Back of the engine.
I'll let every know what the problem was when i find out.I'll wait until a Land Rover manager from a RR dealer gets back from holiday from down under.....a recommended mechanic from my neighbour this time. I do love the car and its my third one and the best until i put the wrong fuel in.
Thanks all for your input
