wonder if anyone can shed some light here on this..

Details: Disco 200tdi, 212k miles, new/rebuild gearbox and transfer box 30k miles ago.

I now have a whirring noise that sounds like its coming from the gearbox… you know it's that kind of noise you get when you are reversing a car, but not as loud.

When I start the Disco from cold there a couple of rattles on the gearbox, like a ttrrrr…trrrmrr, does this 2 or 3 times and stops. No matter if I press the clutch in or not, it always makes the sound.

When I start driving I get the whirring noise..more noticeable on higher revs..the higher the revs, the higher the noise….as soon as I press the clutch the noise stops and everything rolls nice and with no noises.
All gears work and go in fine, including transfer box.

From what I've read this could be clutch release bearing?
I've read around that
  • If press the pedal and it makes the noise, thrust bearing - Not my case
  • If press the pedal and the noise goes, it is the Dual mass flywheel if you have one - (might be this but not sure if I have one?)
  • Standing still, In neutral, makes the noise, press the pedal and it goes, the input bearing or layshaft bearings. - Don’t think its this one as the noise is when moving
  • If it's noisey all the time when you are driving and doesn't make a difference when you press the clutch, it's the gearbox mainshaft or layshaft bearings - Don’t think its this one as the noise goes away when I press the pedal…

I've done a bit of research, but of course its easier if you can actually ask someone that has had this annoying noise…
what do you guys think it might be?

The noise is doing my head in, and next weekend is the chippy run and I'm not sure if I'm damaging the gearbox by driving like this….

Fekin annoying, been doing some welding and changing wheel bearings to get it ok for the chippy run, and now this!!!

cheers,
JP

Put the transfer box in neutral and see if you get the noise in each gear with the engine running. Or in other words, lets try and eliminate the transfer box. :)

Also has it got worst since the new box or has it always been a characteristic of the new box?

The new box was in when I bought the Disco, I have all receipts from a 4x4 garage with the license plate on the receipts and mileage, that's how I know it was done (and the seller told me), receipts on over a grand work done.

Ok, I'll try that with the transfer in neutral and drive around.. will reply back with results once I've tried that.
thanks

It won't drive around :) It is just to test which of the two boxes is making the noise......altho transfer in neutral will still mean that the input gears are turning.

I have no doubt that it is a new box, just curious if what you are hearing are new tight meshing gears or if it is something that has started to happen recently.

yeh, after i wrote that i thought... well, if the transfer is in neutral, it wont go anywhere...

so how do i test it? just wack it to neutral, first gear and try and drive? sorry mate...dont understand, im getting confused..lol

maybe gave the wrong impression andy, didnt mean to sound that i thought you were doubting :)

Yup ... transfer in neutral, start up, into gear and drive .. you won't go anywhere! Doesn't need many revs, but try all gears and see if the noise is there. Andy's trying to eliminate spurious noises and determine exactly what's causing the noise, neutral in transfer box eliminates transmission so is a good test as to whether it'll be diff 'whine' etc etc.

Sorry it got a bit confusing on the first post, I meant to say the trrrr...trrr noise that I get a couple of times when starting, I was told it could be the clutch release bearing?

but my main concern is actually the whirring noise, altough not sure if both are related.

The gearbox has received new fresh oil 50 miles ago, suppose the levels are ok as my mechanic did it...

yes - just wack it to neutral, first gear and try and drive? - the idea is to get the gearbox to turn over (in all gears) without having road noise and trannybox noise to confuse ya.

.. or alternatively set-up a video camera, and floor it as you release the clutch!!

;)

Ok, sorry to say but all went ok and the front neighbours garden/car/front lawn is still intact..lol

back to the gearbox..
wacked the transfer to neutral, accelarate though the gears, 1,2,3,4,5....and no whirring noise...

what does that mean? that my transfer box is foked? :(

^^ as above, seem like not the main gearbox.

Perhaps worth dropping the oil out of the transfer box and checking that you it's not go anything 'odd' in it.

This doesn't seem to stack up tho, as you said the noise rises with the revs. A transfer box problem would be road speed related, not engine speed.......hum.......

Sounds to me like it might be diff whine .. almost always sounds like the gearbox, but noises travel!!

Diagnosed my rear diff issues by getting the vehicle lifted on the chassis with all wheels off the ground and running it, in gear, so the transmission could turn too. Because the noise goes away when you press the clutch might be a red herring, and all that's happened is that you've taken off the torque from the diffs, so they don't whine. Might just need diff pinions shimming a tad, or diff output bearings changing ...

Well... the rear diff has a brand new pinion and seals..

might try and lift the whole thing....

thanks for all the sugestions...
no way of knowing if im damaging something is there?

if its diff whine...is that a new diff job?

Now it's worth trying what MHM says, take the front prop off and drive a short way with diff lock on .. you'll be in two wheel drive, rear wheels driven, front not so watch cornering .. it's 'different'. Then refit the prop and remove the rear prop and go for a drive ... depending upon when you hear the whine will give a clue as to which end the whine's coming from. If you're really unlucky it'll whine from both ends.

When my rear went we were convinced for a while that it was the front gearbox output!!

So, having found where the whine's coming from you then need to decide how bad it is and what's making it, and the only real way to do this is to remove the diff, take it apart and test/measure the movements/clearances etc to the specifications. Rave has a procedure for it and I think Ashcrofts site (could be another company, sorry!) does.

'Course .. I'm assuming it's not simply tyre noise ...

Good luck .. ;)
