Hi Guys,
My RRC 3.9 auto has developed a metallic whine only when accelerating - any clues what to look for? Getting noisier now but no sound when foot off the gas. Different people have said CV joint, could be transfer box chain but would welcome your expert opinions. If it is transfer box, what checks can be made to find out?

Could be diff pinion bearings or worn diff...?

Have a look to see if either of your diff drive flange seals are wet with oil and have any sideways movement?

A quick check is to drain the axles and see if you have metalic debris on the drain plug magnets etc...

drain a bit of oil out of transfer box and gear box check for contamination, metal sheen or debris, not usually chain in fact they dont very often go wrong more likely epicyclics in transfer box or gear box

Thanks JellySpanners and jamesmartin will check for all these. A friend of mine stated that the transfer box chain needed replacing every 100K - (recommended by Ashcrofts) - is this true?
Knowing only bits and pieces I have to rely on a friend to do the work - plus being a girly - yes I know that is no excuse but if I knew what I was doing then I would do it myself! So till I know more have to rely on what others tell me and don't want to get stranded!

And love my Rangey even thought she is a '90 - still going strong!

It will not be chain in transfer box. Bet on it. More likely a diff.

probabaly epicyclics in transfer box as said before, I have one exactly the same as yours and it does it too- can go on for years so I wouldnt worry untill it goes bang!

I agree with JellySpanners, front axle pinion bearings on ours ,as they are tipped slightly up and can suffer slightly less lubrication.
It's been like that for a couple of years and helps me go to sleep on long journeys, the wife's driving of course

diffs usually are more noisy on over run,

Your right I got it wrong as our is only noisy on the over run and I retract what I posted earlier.
The noise is the front axle on ours and it only started when we refitted the front prop after driving on the rear because the centre diff was seized.

did you fit new viscous coupling and if you did how much was it

I put it off for a year just driving about on the rear
2 years we fxxked tyres and could not drive a round our local KFC because it would not turn around tight corners.
Any way when I did change it it was a piece of **** to change.
I had a second hand viscous diff in a 1990 RRC so I stuck that in.
The 1990 was a manual and ours is an auto.

Thanks for all the replies!:)
Apologies for any stupid questions - still learning!:der:
Back diff changed last year - didn't realise this had never worked since buying - do you think it has put a strain on the front diff to be back in working order?
Just ordered a CV joint with ABS from Paddocks as there is a little play in front driver's one.
So if noise still apparent then down to checking if front diff, front axle pinion bearings, epicyclics (what are these?) in transfer box - anything more?

have you dropped some oil, epicyclics are the gears in transfer box to give hi/low and the gears in your auto ,they are the strongest form of gear system and depending of where you put drive in and take drive out can give two forward and one reverse these do whine as they wear but as said before will last years ,they cost too much to replace easier to swap boxes ,probably someone that knows what they sound like for comfirmation ,it is allways a good idea to check other sources

Interesting theory about eliptical gears in transfer box causing a whine. But no merit in it, as they are not driven in high axle. They are only engaged to give low axle ratio.

thanks for replies. haven't dropped any oil but will get my friend to check the epicyclics when he is changing the CV joint as well as the other things you have all mentioned.
Thanks once again for all your expert replies - thoroughly good forum for finding solutions to problems - keep going!:clap2:
