Ok while I'm at it, I thought I'd try to get a fix on my 38 as well. I also my got current P38 just recently ( my 4th overall :) ) Its a 1998 V8 Vogue SE, yes I know vogues only came out somewhere around 2000, but this is a Vogue and I've got a brass plate on the LHD door stating this Vogue SE was crafted at Land Rover Special Vehicles and has a sign by some chap by the name of D.Thorpe, also has the autobiography, plague on the slam panel under the hood.

Anywhoo ! The issue is the remote does not work, when I got it early Oct, the keyfob was in tatters held toghter by gaffer tape, no working LED or nothing. Bought myself a new Fob shell, transferred the guts from my old one to the new one. It had some residue built up on the PCB, so cleaned that out with some CRC electrical cleaner first, put in new batteries. And now the LED was working. Even before the central locking was working and the car would start perfectly. Anyways tried resyncing it, remote still not working. Tried all sync procedures on every landy site ever listed, still remote not working.

Checked to see if RF receiver was hooked up properly and it was, but still took out, cleaned it and plugged it back securely, still not working. Thought maybe my FOB isn't transmitting but had it checked out but it is perfectly transmitting at 433hz. With the help of another kind member here who has a nanocom, checked if the RF was working properly and nanocome says all outstations are working fine. after resetting In another setting on the nano, can't remember which, RF receiver I think, get the message "Becm has not received a valid radio code"

So if everything is working why isn't the Becm getting a valid code and remote not working ? Unless it was a Keyfob from another car, then the car shouldn't start right ?
 
With the nanocom you should be able to see if the BECM receives when the FOB is operated. If it's receiving a code, either the FOB needs to be re-synced or it's the wrong FOB.
 
How exactly would we do that with the nanocom. The issue I have is I don't have one but one, but very helpful member does and fortunately lives close by. So I'm not very through with it since he never lets me play with it and although he has one, neither is he ( I'm sure he is reading this and I'm going to get an earful for saying that :) ) Better than not having one anyday I say :)

from what I recall and having read the manual, in Becm settings, it checked all the outstations which includes the RF. There is a procedure involved of switching on the car for 5 secs and then switching it off from what I remember and then the nanocom checks if all the outstations have reported back to the Becm and that checks out ok.

But in RFsetting I think, I get the Becm has failed to receive a valid radio code message. I'm also thinking most probably its the RF reciver that is conked out but in does checkout in the Outstation test ??

I just don't want to throw parts at the car with knowing exactly what I'm doing and then having new dud parts in the car. Also our scrappies get his cars from Japan and sell parts at a very reasonable price, just want to make sure that Japan is also 433, from what I know its only NAS vehicles that have 314 or something.
 
Well I re read the manual again, I was under the impression it was an outstation, since but you could be right..Hmmmm

See if you can make better sense of it, but I have a feeling you are correct and I've been wrong in thinking the RF is also an outstation. Which would totaly make sense then !

Alright then finally got another RF receiver and still no joy. I've come to a metal block on this as everything that is in or connected the remote system works but still the remote CDL doesn't !

FOB Batteries : Check
Fob Transmitting at 433 : Check
CDL : Check
RF Rec : Check
FOB Sync : Done all the dance routines ever listed on the web and elsewhere for this.

What am I missing ? Anybody with any clue or leads on this one ?

So, 3 possibilities. Wrong FOB for BECM, RF receiver faulty and sending corrupt code, FOB rolling code out of range meaning re-sync of FOB needed. How you do this depends on year, with mine if the car was locked on the FOB, I unlock the drivers door with the key, only the drivers door unlocks, I put the key in the ignition, the FOB re-syncs, the LED flashes the other doors unlock and that's it. Earlier cars with out the passive coil in the ignition switch are a bit more complicated. PM MOZZ

Key works, locks and unlocks all doors, if it was the wrong FOB the car wouldn't start right ?

Now I have checked two RF Receivers, what are the chances of both being duds ?

I've tried all sorts of different sync methods and none have seemed have worked, including the one in the Owners Manual.

I'll try to get a few more receivers from friends cars I know that have working remotes to see if that makes any difference.

You can lock and unlock the car on the key and it will start according to my book, what you cannot do is lock on the FOB and then unlock on the Key and start it.
You really sure it's the correct FOB?
 
I've read a coil in the ignition reads off the key fob and if it matches, only then after proper codes and communications have been established the car starts. If I'm reading you right, I could have a 5 quid blade cut at the key makers and use it and just not have remote locking and unlocking capabilities.

If that's the case its a pretty useless security system the P38a has, somehow I kinda doubt it that's the case.

The coil is post 99. It only unlocks and works if the car was locked on the key.
 
From the Rover ETM 1997-99 GEMS - 6th Edition

"The vehicle can be mobilised by any of the following
methods:

Turn the ignition on (The handset must be functioning
properly and within close proximity to the
key!)"

Also before this it mentions the car will go into passive immobilisation if the handset is not working.

This leads me to believe that its the right FOB or might as well chuck my keyfob in the bin and get a nice shiny key cut at the local mall and use that instead :p

That only applies post 99MY. You can lock and unlock using the key and also superlock. If the alarm systems have not been deactivated you will have to enter the EKA code to start the car if the FOB is dead. If the alarm and EKA code have been deactivated then you can just lock and unlock on the key as I see it, as in your Police mode it would seem:)
