Hi All!

Im lookin at getting a winch... (just in case the worst happens... I no longer have a wingman to go laning with so towing WHEN i get stuck is out the window! :doh:)

I got a budget of £250-£300 (the lower the better.. as im sure i'll have to repair something expensive soon :p )whats the best in that price range, what sort of pull will i need for a kitted disco?

I was thinking electric? is the Tirfor man enough to get a disco out of proper stuck situations? I've got a hi-lift jack that i've used a few times to winch out of just slippery bits where it lost traction, but tbh i haven't had to do that again since i fitted better mt tires ;)

hahah, man enough.The right tirfor will have enough power to lift ya motor
 
i got both of my winch's from winch it, both was about £250/£290 both work well one is 2 years old the other 9 month never had any problems with them

I have one of their plasmas fitted to my cheap ebay 12000lb winch and I have seriously loaded it on several occasions, i've done 40 plus recoveries a day at some trials and it has never failed me.

Frankly all this bollox about buy cheap buy twice makes me laugh. I have got my cheapy winch and all I have ever had to do to it was fit a sealed solenoid (which most of the cheap ones come with nowadays!)

I've dragged my discovery out from water that was half way up my windscreen, i've done 40 plus recoveries in a single day, i've done 4 full 100ft winches in a row to get myself through a huge mud field and still its goes strong, so why the ffff would I spend 5 times as much on a Warn winch that will do the same??

I can understand spending the money if you are doing winch challenges and speed counts, but for what I need it for a cheapy is just the job.

So if like me all you need it for is laning or pay and play days then you can't go far wrong.
 
Sorted, thanks for the advice chaps, I was lookin at cheap 12000lb winches on ebay, they seem ok, some had the specs up and they are the same if not better than some of the more expensive name brand jobbies. I appreciate the fact that they may use slightly cheaper materials to keep the costs down but im sure there cant be that much difference can there?? Is 12000lb about the right pull?

one more thing.. plasma rope instead of wire cable.. must have or not really? is it just a safety thing to avoid damage of a wire breaking?

you seriously expect us to believe that(unless you prove us wrong with pics)

this is me n my mate in his discovery as you can see the water is at the bottom of the windscreen an this disco is lifted aswell

after 10 mins and getting nowhere the disco sank even more
i had to get out onto the bonnet and get the winch rope out
there was a win**** winch on this which after 20 mins of being submerged it failed

so frankly saying the water was half way up your windscreen sound like bs to me 40 recoveries in one day and the battery/batterys were fine?

i do a lot of p+p winch/punch challenges 8274 for me its never/ever failed or let me down and you can get 150ft rope on it

You can believe what you like, I don't give a flying **** to be honest! Simple fact for me is I know I did it, i'm not some young lad that thinks he has something to prove, i'm a 42 year old bloke that has been into Landy's and offroad competion since he was 1st able to drive and I have lots to learn still but I do what I do and I thoroughly enjoy it.

Incidentally my split charge system is an Xeng winch grade one and is perfectly up to the job of keeping my batteries topped up for 40 winches in a day. I keep my vehicles maintained so they don't let me down, that way I know what needs doing to stop it from failing me at the wrong time and I can use budget items as required.

There is no way I could justify the price of a Warn winch for the amount of use I give mine.

they are exspensive the 8274 on the front of my rr has the gigglepin conversion and at over £2k yes it aint cheap but its never let me down at p+p or at winch/punch events

yes cheap winchs will always have there place and any winch is better than no winch
