Which snorkel should i choose I'm not a lover of the safari type so it leaves me with either the Southdown or Mantec, I cant decide both have pro's and con's and its not down to person choice because they both look the same.
function is more important to me, can anyone with personal experience of them fight there corner:D

regards

Nick

I have a Southdown, I have mates with safari. I would recommend the safari snorkel as it is more solid, sealed and has an intake that separates out rain and water ingress through splashing.

I have attached a pipe to the underside of my air intake and it surprised me how much water actually gets in just through normal driving and water splashes.

Actually I think the Southdown performs better than the Safari .. I know of at least two safaris that failed, fairly dramatically in one case with bent pushrods etc, 'cos the fitters didn't mod the airbox right .. not strictly Safaris fault but ..

And there's a lip inside my Southdown top that deflects water away, and it's turned to the side so doesn't get ripped off in undergrowth .. again unlike a couple of Safari (or safari copies) that did recently ..

going by the views already, it would be down to your own choice. I read everyones thoughts on here before I finally went with a Safari Snorkel, wasn't cheap but I liked it. Don't like the look of the southdown drainpipes. Yet I'd love a bonnet pod soon, and I know lots a peeps don't like them!!!!

Each to their own, I suppose

Personally I dislike the look of the southdown snorkel, as it's silver section looks awful I think.

The mantec snorkel was always my favorite as it was fitted to the camel discos, and doesn't stand out too much, and although not as common, are reasonably priced.

The safari I have never really liked, because it always looking to me like the disco was wearing one of those microphones that people in call centres wear.

Having said that, I've seen a few safari ones lately and have to say in the flesh, they are a bit showey, but do look very good in the flesh.

As to performance, I'm not sure. I prefer the look of the snorkels which have a pre-cleaner on the end, instead of one of the right angled bits, but not sure which works best. I'm under the impression that the thickness of the snorkel piping is a bit of a bone of contention amongst some, as it may starve the engine, although others say that they are still bigger than the standard air intake.

To add another spanner in the works, there are a company on ebay which make safari 'style' snorkels, for about 90 quid. Apparently the instructions or crap, and the quality is a little questionable, but with proper fitting, and plenty of sealant, as long as you're not driving through the amazon rainforest on a regular basis they should hold up okay.

I have a safari it dose the job. it is well sealed and has saved my engine on numerous occasions that I have had water up to the windscreen.

Safari for me. My current and former snorkels took a battering and still fight to tell the tale.

As long as theyre properly sealed/fitted they will cause no problems, I have a stainless grille on mine too. Believe Terrafirma do a foam sock for the Safari type top too...

To add my two pence. I got hold of a 90 snorkel off ebay, new for 60quid. Then got some suction hose the right size to mate up with the standard airbox. If you use standard airbox, don't forget to seal up the drain holes in the bottom.
