Which Snorkel

Hi All, I have a 1990, 200 tdi 110. ex military and I am thinking of fitting a snorkel but not sure which one I should go for.
I have seen some on ebay for around a £100. Plastic one piece.
or a metal one for around £70, Paddock special.
or Safari which seem the most expensive or a Mantec one.
I sometimes travers some streams which my Landy has copped without any snorkel. I am hoping to do a Morocco trip towards the end of the year and though a snorkel would be less likely to suck up the dust and sand.
Would be interested in hearing anyones views on which one they would suggest.

Well, the best I could afford was the Paddocks cheapo one! It's sat in a box ready to fit to my Ninety - but the kit looks fine to me. As long as the joints are air/water tight I really can't understand what an extra £100 or so buys you.
 
As said before, if you want the tried and tested (though more expensive) one, definitely go for the safari. Though many hate the looks (myself included), they are probably the best snorkels money can buy.
 
Don't forget that on 300TDi & TD5's the Safari seals onto a spigot in the engine bay and not against the wingskin which makes it a much more reliable & robust solution. With 200TDi's & cheaper copies you are back to sealing against the wing which is something I don't like at all.
 
it is true the safari snorkels are easier to connect to the existing pipework as a spigot goes through the wing, Wheras the paddock type one seals against the wing. It does come with a gasket but i binned the bugger it was very flimsey.

I assembled mine with PU sealant first on the inside of the wing and fitted 2 little pop rivets into it to hold it in place for the bolts to line up, Then added PU sealant to the wing and the snorkal. And assembled glad i pop riveted it, Removed excess sealant with a petrol soaked rag, left to dry then coloured it black with a Sharpie marker. Since fitting it i have completely submerged the bonnet(by accident) and it never let a drop past, But i wouldnt trust the ****ty gasket,

Where as the safari snorkel goes straight through the wing and the hose is attached with a jubile clip.

But as already said best you can afford, i just didnt want to pay the money for a safari one, So mines is a MOD one from PA Blanchard's almost identical to the paddocks one

Got mine from P A Blanchard via ebay for £60 delivered, good bit of kit, very solid. Only thing that was a bit **** was the clip that was supposed to hold the mushroom on the top but I replaced that with rubber washered roofing screws/bolts and it does the job!

Thanks for the lead, much appreciated. I have sent PA Branchard an email to see if they can supply a snorkel for a 200tdi. It looks like they only have 300's but fingers crossed as they seem to be better quality that the Paddock one.
I have added Blanchards to my list of favorits for the future.

Mine cost me about £27. Bought a length of breather pipe at the show in Eastnor, then popped down to the local builders merchants for a length of guttering downpipe and an assortment of bends and Bobs your uncle.
In my honest opinion there are companies galore out there exploiting our passion for Land Rovers and simply charge te earth for what are quite simple and cheaply made products.
Buyers beware.
 
mines a stainless steel one, a mate made it for me who makes stainless exhausts for a living. I'ts routed through the top of the drivers side wing so that it does'nt get caught when on p&p days. My last one was home made with black guttering form Wickes with solvent welded joints, I had it mounted on the near side wing and routed the pipe through the side vent, but I broke it at Tong going through the trees, hence the new one mounted on top of the wing.

Thank you all for the replies. In the end I went for the Paddock one as Blanchard did not do one for a 200tdi.
The Paddock one was easy to fit. I used a lot of sealant around the joints to the engine and it works fine. The only problem is the Plastic has discolored and lost its shine. It looks as if the snorkel is as old as the Landy rather than only one year old. As I am tidying the Landy up the snorkel looks tatty. If I was buying again I think I would go for a Mantec one. A guy down the road from has one which is much older and still looks like new.
 
if you can find bodyline trade satin black spray can ,i get mine from brown bros but others do them and just spray it carefully thin coats so no runs it will look like new ,lasts a few years i do disco bumpers and window surrounds doesnt look like paint and doesnt peel off gradually fades over the years
 
not to sure about plastics but with both my 110 and discovery I used Hammerite stone chip shield. Cost about £7 (even from Halfrauds :eek: ) a can but you get plenty out of them.

iirc i got a boot floor, sills, bumpers and inner wings out of one can on my disco with at least 3 coats on each. The 110 took 2 cans but that was for door bottoms, footwells, headlight surrounds, grill, arch extensions and prob a few other bits. The grill is starting to flake a bit but I was running out by then and didnt get to put as much on as I wanted.

Just remember to use more than one coat and score the existing metal slightly to get a good key. It seems to last pretty well after that and gives a good matt finish while being very easy to spray :) .
