Hi,

As I said in the newbie topic I'm considering getting a series.
One of our big problem here (overseas) is parts availability. What usually goes wrong on a land rover, and which modell-engine-gerabox I should be looking after?

As I see it: I'd like the old 2.25 petrol (preferably the 5 bearing one) because I would like to gas it. (to convert to LPG) and I like simple things. TDi, V8, they are a bit too much for my taste.
Smaller elements, like electrics, parts of ignition, belt, even gerenrator, regulator, parts of the suspension stuff like that can be replaced if they needed by parts from different modells, which are accessible. (Don't hate me for this) my aim is not to keep the landy 100% original, but running reliably and still keep it simple. Very simple. :D

So I guess, my bigger problem will be with the engine proper and drivetrain, possibly steering. Should I pay somehow extra attention to those when buying? maybe even getting an extra gearbox, diff while I'm in England getting the landy? (would be dificcult, to drive to UK 1000miles for a hardy plate later... :D )

The car will be like a weekend go-around (not off-road though) and I bet I'll want to do longer trips with it. Managable? :D

Thanks for your advise.

Hi where abouts are you in poland and you can gas a 3 bearing unit as i have a 3 bearing unit on gas and i hide in poland as well and if your stuck for parts then phone up land serwis at Krakow they are the people in poland to deal with pain in the arse but i had some reasonably hard stuff on the shopping list to get hold of and they got it for me if not them then me as my grandad used to run a land rover spares and he transported it out to poland but try and avoid 24 volts as they are a pain in the back side have a look on allegro for land rover seria there are a few on there come up rarely but they are there with a few toys and you should be able to buy pretty much anything you need for any series land rover

Good, list, I'll keep that in mind.

about the tinworm.

How difficult is to work on Landys? I mean from a welder point of view.
Labour in Poland is pretty cheap, and since the bad weather and salting of the roads they eat the cars literally, there are a lot of welders capable of doing good job. (well, hard to find one who will, but that's how it goes...)

So, those points mentioned:
rear crossbar, doorpost, vent areas. How difficult they are to work on? Is that possible to find a Landy with MOT on it, with extensive rust? (I trust MOT in Uk. Not here though... I just got MOT 4 months ago, and the piece which holds the left front swingarm collapsed... small Japo car, but come on... It does not rust THAT fast.)

1 more question, how easy to fix the main elements? axle, engine, gearbox. I read you can buy a rebuild set for the gearbox...? Biggest concern here is not the parts availability, but the postage. I can get a handful of seals and bearings from UK for decent price, but a whole differential would make a holiday to Stonhenge worthwhile. :)

Thanks.

stop stressing about the parts there are a few good suppliers out here, im in warsaw by the way, price is an issue but if its seals and the like not too bad and if or when you need more most of the suppliers in the uk do a fairly reasonable european delivery, based on weight not cost.

where are you in poland?
