Which book??

Hi ppl,

I am in the early stage of planning an overland expedition and I don't even have the car yet. I thought getting a guide book may be a good way to start (instead of trying to pull all the info together using forums). So far I've found 1 that looked (or sounded) good:

Vehicle-dependent expedition guide: 2nd Edition, Field manual by Tom sheppard.

this book is by no means cheap online (~£130 on amazon), so I'm just wondering if someone can tell me is this really worth the £££ or am I simply wasting my already limited car budget? are there better alternatives?

My current daily commuter is a lotus, so trying to come into the world of landrover will be a pretty big change for me (although i'm not getting rid of my car!), and I know nothing about landrovers at the moment. So, any helpful advice to get me on the right starting point will be really appreciated.

sahara overland - a route and planning guide by chris scott

Its a book about overlanding in the sahara but it has a very good section on vehicle preperation.

Morage you have found the right place, or maybe person to help Tom shepards book is an excellent start but some of the sections will baffle you! Its pretty in depth.

Big Ads recommendation on Chris scotts book is good. But i would only advise buying this if you are venturing into North Africa, This is where this book comes into its own. For general overland use, including such in more temperate climates Tom Shepards book is the one to go for. Its far more detailed on preperation, navigation, 1st aid, drviing tech etc than SO. SO is filled more with routes, desert driving, desert navigation, local cultures, people, dialect and various ways of crossing the Sahara (inc by Camel).

DONT BUY IT FOR £130 THOUGH!

Thank you for the hint guys, i have already spoken to desert wind, and they referred me onto the Royal geographical soc, got that + 4x4 driving book all for £50 so am very happy indeed.

To be honest, I have not considered a Toyota at all, there's just something special about defenders, so I doubt I will be tempted away.

Desert wind is Tom Sheppard. And he likes the Defenders to a degree but has some quarms with them in his book. Its a great read I am about 1/3 way through and Its all good. Jai
