Hello there any ideas, 300tdi in my disco has a thirst for coolant, but not too sure where its going can drink a header tank full in 100 miles. Oil si ok new water pump not long fitted no leaks and no steam from the exhaust tail pipe. Is this the dreaded head gasket ? all thoughts welcome:confused:

the best way to find out is to do a compression test - either yourself with a compression tester - ensuring that it is rated for diesel engines - or getting your local garage to do it..

Thanks for that guys,I will have to look a little closer, as it dont look like the rad is leaking but its been that wet around here, a little closer inspection is called for. And a compression test too. Thanks again will let you know the outcome.

I didn't think the rediator was leaking either as I couldn't see anything but a pressure test revealed a slight leak, there was never any coolant lying on the ground

A garage could perform a "sniff test" on the cooling system (detects combustion gases in coolant = head gasket problems) they could also do a cooling system pressure test (pump with gauge placed on header tank) other idea is that it could be your heater matrix (check around footwells for water). Hope this helps!

Before we got the Disco, I had two Freelanders that split their radiator at the seam.
With both of these it was obvious that the rad was at fault even though there was never any water on the ground.
if it is the rad, you should be able to smell the hot antifreeze, it's very distinctive, either that or see a stain where it's leaking and then drying out.
