I am interested in having a go at greenlaning once i can get a couple of jobs done on the disco i've been promising for a month or two!

my query really is what sort of mods (if any) will i need, what tools, spares etc. should i be prepared to keep in the boot and where is the best place in cheshire / north wales area to start off???

i realise that the first thing to do is get some decent rubber but other than that do i really need anything else other than some diesel?

any advice would be great guys (so would any invites!!)

Have a look at the threads below

Welsch boys day out !!!

Link up with Brian and leslie they will look after you !

To be fair if this is your first time, Here a list to what Id do first

Tyres prefebably the biggest you could get Ie 33 you dont need much mods to run them apart from cutting down yor arches.

Being a diesel I would get a snorkel

If you have some money left buy a lift kit maybe 2" lift.

Again If Icould do it all over again save the money and buy the best thing you can afford. It sometimes pays to buy the whats the best on the market so it last you a lot longer!.

thanks for that so far guys...........

the main thing is i don't want to go into the route of 'proper' off road days - i'd just like to take it for a fun day out every now and then! it gets used for tame off road stuff as i use it when i'm out shooting on the farms etc. i have vermin control on but i would really like to try something a bit rougher!

the tyre query is one for a different section of the forum - as for the suspension lift....... i'd love to but if i was gonna go that far into modding the disco i'd sell it and buy a v8 90 or 110 instead and give it full treatment!

back to the original question though - and not making me think where i can waste my wages..... if i went along would i NEED any mods or is it usually enough to have a capable off roader and some good rubber?

Proper off road days are, as far as I'm concerned the best way to start. They are THE fun day out every now and again.

If your on a pay and play day then tyres aren't a problem as there is always some one to pull you out. And I wouldn't bother with a suspension lift Untill you start doing it seriously!

It depends on who you go laning with and where you do it as to whether you need to modify your vehicle.

As for good rubber, It's a bit like animal oil.

ditto grunt.

some of the greenlanes about are so tame you could take a lowered porsche down them with no trouble! others are so rediculously cut up that you can find yourself up to the axles even on 31"+ tyres.

best thing you could do is buy an OS map of your area and look at some BOATS (byways open to all traffic) go take a peak. if it gets too tight, rough, rutted... just back her up and go back the way you came. it pays to go along with someone else just so you have the option of getting recovered, that way, you push things a little more. 1st thing id do even BEFORE you change boots, is sort out front and rear recovery points. even with big mud boots you may get bogged down and need to be recovered.

pay and plays are great fun as grunt said, test water before you wade, as ive dropped into a few which came over the seats. if id spend 30 seconds checking it, id have driven around it! once you have your rec. points, you will be well set for these events.

no other mods needed really, snorkel for peace of mind, steering guard for protection of steering rods, damper etc.. you can also get them with recovery eyes which would be worth it.

take your wheel off the rear door when you go out and secure it in the rear as the rough stuff on a heavy wheel (mud boots are seriously heavy!) may rip your door in half or atleast lead to premature wear.

ow yer forgot the little bits. spade, shackles, and a tow strap or 2 :) put it all in an ammo box and secure in the rear too.

if your anyithng like me, you will get bitten by the bug start laning, go to pay and plays, spend too much on bolt ons and end up doing RTV events!

anything else, just ask.

Agree with what being said.

The other point to it is, they are a bit inter link you get taller tyres you need to sort out a litle lift on your suspension....

If you are thinking of using a lot of playing and going into water Id keep away from the v8s.

To my opinion the diesels tdi are better for the bottom end torque!!!
plus better on the fuel consumption, unless you convert it to lpg.

i agree with the threads about trying pay n play days to get started, you can learn a lot but the are a lot of know all **** alls at these events too so just be careful who and what you listen to, as for what you need, ignore most of the crap on here. you dont need a 2" lift or a snorkel. just get yourself a decent set of A/T's and front & rear recovery points, take a long strop and a couple of shackles and also a spade. if you get into it and enjoy it and feel you want to go a bit more serious then you can look at getting it lifted and other mods.just remember, it doesnt need to look like something out of tomb raider to do the job

with mud tyres yes !! other wise its just a car with a four wheel drive !!!!

I only say mud tyres as you ganna be playing in mud !!

In my opinion All terrains are not as good as the muds!

To be fair depends how much you ganna use it off the road!

You said you use it for shooting, I deffo suggest Mud tyres !!

Again you will be in a long debate what the best mud tyres you can get!

My opinion is Bf !!! you get what you pay for ! it is a tud on the expensive side.

Just remember! dont do what I did I bought small tyres first and then 6 months down the line wished I bought the bigger set and you end up kicking yourself !!!

well its obvious mud tyres are better off road ffs i think the name gives it away, but a good set of a/t's are plenty good enough for a mild introduction to off roading or green laning, how about if he takes your advice, spends close on a grand , goes off the beaten track and thinks "ooh this aint fer me" if that were the case ans it was me, i would find out where you lived and beat the living daylights out of you. hence i said just give it a go before you go wild with yer money

Christ I only said mud terrains because he arleady uses it in abloody field !!Hence why I suggested it.
If he was ganna be diriving in bloody kenya or sand drivin i would say go for the all terrain.

I havent yet heard of anyone not liking the off roading aprt from its dirty !!!
I can understand If it was motorbikes like ****ting yourslef up on an r1 cos its too fast!!!

note to self, do not give yella any advice on anything ;)

i run mud terrains everywhere cos i got nothing else! but generally if you use it to commute, go to shops etc, A/T's will be better and wear better.

and i disagree that without muds a landy is just another 4x4... put muds on a hilux and see how far you get... i can asure you its not as far as a landy. even with standard tires!

Griffdowg

I only speak from experience with the A terrains they are a good tyre to have if you not going to venture too much on the mud !!!

The ammount of time I have had to pull mates with them on is just a joke!!

To be fair they are better than road tyres!!

Im not up for confrontation or anything.

From being a Lancia turbo driver cos I got a banned then something sensible to discovery !!
I have wished that somebody said to me buy this and this for your truck not because its what everyone has but will help you off roading. I would probably be a few hundred quid richer !!!

ffs i wasnt saying you are wrong, all i said was the lad can venture on the soft stuff with a/t's and doesnt need to spend the best part of 200 quid on m/t's just to try off roading. as for getting stuck on a/t's i would put 90% of that down to the driver.there are far too many 4x4 drivers that go offroading and just cane it on the soft stuff then blame the tyres when they get stuck, griff i agree if you can only aford 1 set of tyres and you want to do loads of off roading then go for muds, ffs if you read the question in the first place you will see he wants to know what mods he will need to try laning. like i said a/t's and recovery points are the only mods you need. lets get this into perspective, if the guy intends doing loads of off roading then he really shouldnt be asking what he needs as this would give the impression he aint got a clue, but as it was he asked what he needs to try it.

I am in agreement with yella on the A/T tyres, if it is going to be used primarily on green lanes as the post stated why oh why do people insist on putting M/T's on to rip up the remaining bits of earth left to us to drive on, surely if the ground is that muddy requiring M/T's it should not be driven on until it has dried out!!! If the Disco is going to be used on hard/rocky green lanes in the wet months a good set of A/T's will be best. One of the cheapest mods that you can do to a 300tdi Disco is to remove the anti roll bar links to give more axle articulation (but will have to be refitted for MOT). Do you have a tow bar fitted?

where is this guy anyway?
yella i wasnt saying buy MT's if its the only set your buying. my 90 came with MT's and i cant really justify spending money changing them for AT's so im stuck with them, so to speak. no pun intended ;)

so its agreed... AT's to start and recovery points? shackles, rope, spade as the extras.
